Shane van Gisbergen Reveals How His NASCAR Career Went From One Race to Stardom in Just Months
Shane van Gisbergen shines in NASCAR career, transitioning from Supercars to become a formidable contender on US tracks.

Shane van Gisbergen NASCAR career has rapidly evolved since his unexpected victory in the Chicago race in 2023, which marked his breakthrough in the NASCAR Cup Series. Originally known for his success in the Supercars Championship, van Gisbergen has quickly established himself as a prominent driver in the United States, with his passion for NASCAR growing stronger after each race.

Following another win in Chicago this past weekend, van Gisbergen spoke with Kevin Harvick during the Happy Hour segment, sharing insights into how his career transformed so swiftly and how his enthusiasm for the sport developed. He described how the transition from Australian supercars to NASCAR brought both challenges and opportunities that reshaped his trajectory in motorsports.

Rapid Rise After Chicago Win Changed Everything

Reflecting on his first NASCAR Cup Series victory, van Gisbergen noted,

“Things spiraled pretty quickly after Chicago.”

He explained that just two months prior to that win, he had committed to racing in Australia for at least another year but found himself ready for a new challenge.

“Things weren’t going that good in Australia, I guess, with the new car and stuff. I just was ready for a change,”

he said. The proposal from Justin Marks to join a year-long learning project before fully entering the Cup Series came at the perfect moment in his career.

“It’s been the best thing I’ve ever done,”

van Gisbergen remarked.

His decision to switch from the Supercars Championship to NASCAR involved adapting to a very different style of racing, which demanded significant adjustments. Despite these differences, van Gisbergen’s skills have translated well, allowing him to compete effectively and gain recognition in a highly competitive environment.

The Distinct Challenges of NASCAR Compared to Australian Supercars

Van Gisbergen discussed some of the unique difficulties involved in switching between these racing series. NASCAR offers a wide variety of tracks and formats that change from week to week, unlike the more uniform nature of the Supercars Championship.

“It’s probably more intense, because it’s every single week and the challenge is so different every week,”

he told Harvick. He elaborated on the varied track styles and the preparation needed to stay competitive.

In NASCAR, the level of competition and data sharing also adds pressure. Instead of comparing only with teammates, drivers can study everyone’s performance data, raising the stakes further. Van Gisbergen commented,

“On a road course, I hate it, because everyone can see my stuff and it’s all people seem to be talking about on the weekend.”

He noted the importance of analyzing top drivers for each track.

“Especially when you go to a Pocono or a Martinsville, you study someone like Denny Hamlin, who’s amazing at those tracks, and the tendencies he has, or Chase Elliott at Martinsville. There’s some guys who really stand out.”

He pointed out that on tracks like Las Vegas, the competition is more unpredictable, making preparation and study even more complex. This variety demands constant learning and adaptation to remain a frontrunner throughout the season.

Impact of Van Gisbergen’s Presence on NASCAR’s Road Courses

Shane van Gisbergen has boosted the competitiveness of road course racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, bringing fresh intensity and new perspectives from his background in Australian motorsports. His performances have captured the attention of fans and fellow drivers alike, enhancing the excitement around these races.

Looking ahead, van Gisbergen will again compete for a win in the upcoming race at Sonoma, a track known for its challenging layout and technical demands. His success so far suggests he will continue to be a strong contender for victories and influence within the series.
