The Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman has not entered into contract negotiations with his team, despite facing trade speculation. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, discussions about a contract extension between Bregman and the Red Sox
haven’t yet spoken about an extension,
though both sides wouldn’t mind getting something done.
Trade Rumors Surrounding Bregman
Several teams, including the Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, and Milwaukee Brewers, have been linked to Bregman, as reported last week by Jim Bowden of The Athletic. However, Ken Rosenthal, also from The Athletic, described the possibility of the Red Sox trading Bregman as remote.
Contract Details and Agent’s Perspective
Though Bregman and Boston have yet to finalize a long-term deal, his current contract extends through 2027, with an opt-out clause available after this season and a player option for 2027. Scott Boras, Bregman’s agent, expressed openness to renegotiation with the Red Sox. Boras told Tim Healey of the Boston Globe,
I always tell the team—and Alex directs me to tell them—we’re always open to any conversation,
adding,
Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive.
Bregman’s Recent Performance and Return from Injury
After missing over a month due to a quad injury, Bregman returned to the lineup on Friday. In 53 games this season, he has recorded 11 home runs, 35 RBIs, and holds a .298 batting average. His presence is crucial for the Red Sox as they aim to strengthen their playoff position.
Red Sox’s Current Season Outlook and Playoff Prospects
Following a challenging June, the Red Sox have rebounded impressively with a 10-game winning streak, moving back into contention for a postseason berth. The team’s recent success lessens the likelihood of trading Bregman, as they rely on his contributions to maintain a competitive edge in the playoffs.
