Evgeny Kuznetsov’s Agent Rules Out Capitals Reunion with Alex Ovechkin, Shocking NHL Fans
Evgeny Kuznetsov's future remains uncertain, dashing hopes for an Alex Ovechkin Capitals reunion despite strong past ties.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, the veteran center known for his crucial role in the Washington Capitals’ only Stanley Cup victory, remains a free agent as of mid-July 2025. Despite widespread speculation about an Alex Ovechkin Capitals reunion, Kuznetsov’s agent has ruled out the possibility, surprising many hockey followers.

Reasons Behind the Absence of a Washington Return for Kuznetsov

After completing a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes at the end of the 2024-25 season, Kuznetsov entered unrestricted free agency on July 1. Many expected him to return to Washington to reunite with longtime teammate Alex Ovechkin, with whom he shared a decade of on-ice chemistry. However, agent Shumi Babayev dismissed these hopes in a recent interview.

Speaking to La Page Sportive, Babayev stated,

I don’t think so. He could go to Carolina before returning to Washington. I don’t see how he could go back there.

This comment cast doubt on the possibility of Kuznetsov rejoining the Capitals, a team that would certainly benefit from his offensive skills. Kuznetsov was vital in Washington’s 2017-18 championship, leading all players in playoff points with 32 in 24 games, and amassing 575 points over 743 <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/hockey/nhl/”>NHL contests throughout his career.

Clarifying Montreal Canadiens’ Role in Kuznetsov’s Future

Rumors had also circulated linking Kuznetsov to the Montreal Canadiens, who are in urgent need of a solid second-line center. Despite this, Babayev confirmed that no substantial negotiations have taken place.

He explained that Montreal’s management acknowledged Kuznetsov’s potential but indicated there was no space for him on their roster. Babayev remarked,

Evgeny would be a good fit,

and

He wants to play in Montreal, but there’s no room. I don’t think he’ll get the chance.

Further discussing his exchange with Montreal’s leadership, Babayev added,

I spoke with Montreal. [The leaders] respect Evgeny. They explained their situation to me, and it’s normal,

suggesting that while interest exists, practical circumstances limit opportunities.

Looking Ahead for Kuznetsov’s NHL Prospects

The situation is complicated by Kuznetsov’s recent time overseas with SKA St. Petersburg, where limited ice time left him eager for an NHL return. Despite the lack of firm options currently, his agent remains hopeful about securing a suitable position for the two-time NHL All-Star soon.

This ongoing free agency period leaves Washington Capitals fans disheartened by the absence of a revived partnership between Kuznetsov and Ovechkin, which could have bolstered the team’s offense. As offseason negotiations continue, the hockey world watches closely to see where Kuznetsov will land, with implications for both his career trajectory and the teams seeking offensive reinforcements.
