Alex Ovechkin Shuts Down Retirement Rumors: “No Date Set,” Future Still Uncertain Ahead of Final Contract Season

As Alex Ovechkin enters the final year of his contract with the Washington Capitals, rumors about his potential retirement have intensified. Despite growing speculation, Ovechkin has firmly denied setting any retirement date and remains uncertain about his future beyond the current NHL season, addressing the rumors directly.

Ovechkin Refutes Speculation Over Retirement Plans

The Capitals star openly criticized media reports suggesting he plans to retire after next season, stating that such conclusions are premature. Speaking to Russian outlet Sport-Express, Ovechkin expressed frustration over how quickly the rumors spread, particularly after comments from his wife Nastya and a mistaken announcement from the Capitals organization labeling next season as his last.

During his conversation with Igor Rabiner of Sport-Express, Ovechkin said,

“Of course (there is no date set for his retirement),”

and added,

“This is pure nonsense, which you (media) guys are starting to turn over and put Nastya in such a position. We’ll see.”

Possible Future Paths After Capitals Contract Ends

Although Ovechkin has not signed any contract extension, Washington remains the most likely destination if he continues in the NHL, considering he has spent his entire 20-year career with the Capitals. However, a return to his original professional team, Dynamo Moscow, also appears to be a plausible option once his current deal expires.

When asked whether he planned to keep playing post-contract, Ovechkin offered no definitive answer. He left the possibility open, remarking, “Anything is possible.”

Ovechkin’s Ongoing Preparation for Upcoming Season

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his career’s next phase, Ovechkin has begun training with his longtime coach Pavel Burlachenko in preparation for the upcoming season. He is expected to surpass the 900-goal threshold during the 2025-26 season, further solidifying his status as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The combination of Ovechkin’s ambiguous retirement outlook and his continuing commitment to high-level performance underlines the fluctuating nature of his future. His eventual decision will significantly impact the Capitals organization and the broader hockey community, leaving fans and analysts eager to see what comes next for the iconic captain.
