Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs star, has been medically cleared to return to basketball following his recovery from a blood clot in his right shoulder. The 21-year-old center shared the update with Maxime Aubin of the French outlet L’Équipe, revealing that he received the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just last Friday.
“I’m officially cleared to return,” Wembanyama said.
“It just happened — I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just a few hours ago (last Friday). Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again!”
Wembanyama’s Impressive Performance Before Medical Setback
After a standout rookie season where he won Rookie of the Year and was runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year, Wembanyama has continued to establish himself as one of the NBA’s premier talents. In the 2024/25 season, he earned his first All-Star selection and posted averages of 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks across 33.2 minutes per game.
Despite his season being cut short by a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis shortly after the All-Star break, Wembanyama still led the NBA in total blocked shots with 176, significantly ahead of second-place Brook Lopez, who had 148 blocks.
Outlook for Wembanyama and the Spurs Ahead of Next Season
The Spurs and Wembanyama have remained hopeful that he would recover fully in time for the 2025/26 season, a goal now realized with his medical clearance. Standing 7 feet 4 inches tall, Wembanyama’s return is expected to be a significant boost for San Antonio’s roster and defensive presence.
Earlier doubts about his participation in France’s summer EuroBasket tournament remain, as Wembanyama had expressed uncertainty in April about his ability to compete. Although this medical update is positive, confirmation regarding his involvement in EuroBasket will likely come later.
