Tarik Skubal will start the American League’s All-Star Game with his teammate Casey Mize nearby, both having endured major injuries in 2022. Skubal was recovering from flexor tendon surgery, while Mize underwent Tommy John surgery. During the Tigers’ road trips, the two stayed behind in Detroit, supporting each other daily throughout their long rehabilitation.
A Shared Path Through Setbacks and Recovery
Skubal described their bond formed during rehab on SiriusXM’s MLB Network Radio pregame show, saying,
“We both got hurt in the same season. We rehabbed together,”
and added,
“We spent a ton of time together in Detroit. When the team was on the road, it was just me and him every day, pretty much.”
Facing setbacks and frustrating days, Skubal closely witnessed Mize’s struggle not only with the injury but also with regaining his form.
Mize’s Determination Earned Him an All-Star Spot
Skubal highlighted Mize’s persistence, saying,
“Coming back last year, not performing to the caliber that he expects himself to perform to,”
and continued,
“Then him coming back this year without a for-sure spot on the roster… and going out and earning everything. He’s earned this moment.”
Mize entered spring training battling for a roster position and left it pitching strongly, registering a 3.38 ERA over 18 starts to secure his first trip to the Midsummer Classic.
Friendship and Pride Ahead of a Special Night
For Skubal, witnessing Mize’s journey adds depth to their All-Star experience.
“I couldn’t be more proud of him as a friend, but also as a teammate,”
Skubal said.
“He does everything right. He’s a first-class person, and a first-class teammate.”
The game’s venue makes the night even more meaningful since Mize, originally from Georgia and a lifelong Braves fan, will have family present at Truist Park. Skubal expressed his hopes for Mize to appear in the game, noting,
“This means a lot to him,”
and,
“And it makes the moment that much more special.”
