Denver Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto has emerged as a key defensive force following a breakthrough 2024 season, compiling an impressive 13.5 sacks after limited starts in his first two years. As he heads into the 2025 season and a contract year, Bonitto is motivated to continue improving and use last year’s success as a foundation for even greater achievements.
Bonitto Reflects on Increased Drive and Preparation
Speaking on The Jim Rome Show, Bonitto explained how his breakout season fueled his motivation.
“Honestly, I feel like it’s made me hungrier,”
he said.
“Now that I’ve kind of got a taste, having a really good season and everything that comes with that, I feel like I’ve attacked this offseason the hungriest I have. I’m really looking forward to getting back out there and seeing how much I’ve grown with all the training.”
This mindset reflects Bonitto’s determination to push beyond his previous limits.
Statistical Highlights and Team Contributions
Throughout the 2024 campaign, Bonitto took on a larger role in the Broncos’ defense, registering 48 combined tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 54 quarterback pressures, and 24 quarterback hits, in addition to his career-high sack total. He managed to sack quarterbacks at least once in 11 regular-season games, showcasing consistent impact and reliability on the field as a third-year player.
When asked about the factors behind his growth, Bonitto credited both rigorous preparation and team dynamics.
“I feel like it was a bunch of things, whether it was my preparation — each year I’m taking things and I’m learning more things … whether it’s film session, weight room, practice habits, things like that,”
he said.
“And just as far as on the field, not to say it’s easy, but when you’re with a bunch of selfless guys like the guys I’m rushing with, everybody eats. It’s just a matter of dialing into the game plan and rushing together. I feel like, not only for myself, but you know that’s why everybody had a really good year in the D-tackle room and the edge room.”
Dynamic Duo with Jonathon Cooper Revives Broncos Legacy
Bonitto’s success also came alongside teammate Jonathon Cooper, who recorded 10.5 sacks, creating a formidable pass-rushing tandem. Their combined efforts marked the first instance since 2018 that two Broncos defenders reached double-digit sacks, a feat last accomplished by Von Miller and Bradley Chubb.

Describing their relationship, Bonitto shared,
“Me and Coop have always kinda pushed each other. We’ve always kinda reminded ourselves of the goals we came in with in the league. We’re always a competitive group with me and him, and just pushing each other every day since I came in as a rookie. Kinda instilling that type of competition with the younger guys in the room, as well. It’s always a healthy competition and a brotherhood between me and him, and I’m glad with how it’s going. We’re spreading it onto the younger guys and making it such a competitive room where everybody wants to be great.”
Impact Plays Against Division Rivals and Memorable Moments
Bonitto demonstrated his ability to perform in crucial moments, particularly against AFC West rivals. He recorded three sacks in two matchups against the Kansas City Chiefs, helping to disrupt one of the league’s top offenses. Additionally, he contributed a standout pick-six by intercepting a trick play pass from Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, illustrating his playmaking versatility beyond rushing the passer.
Prospects for Contract Extension and Broncos’ Future Outlook
As a vital part of defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s scheme, Bonitto appears poised for a significant contract extension, reflecting his growing value within the Broncos organization. Denver is building on a successful 2024 campaign where they finished 10-7 and earned a playoff berth for the first time since 2015.
The team further strengthened its defense by adding safety Talanoa Hufanga and linebacker Dre Greenlaw, bolstering an already competitive unit. With these additions, and Bonitto continuing his rise, the Broncos are positioned to maintain strong defensive performances and strive for continued success into the 2025 season and beyond.
