Pirates Give Liover Peguero Final Shot as Adam Frazier Replacement in Crucial 2026 Push
Adam Frazier's Pirates replacement, Liover Peguero, returns, aiming to seize his final MLB opportunity against the White Sox.

As the Pittsburgh Pirates prepare to face the Chicago White Sox at home, the team has recalled Liover Peguero to fill the void left by the trade of Adam Frazier. Peguero was briefly promoted earlier this season, achieving two hits in nine at-bats before being sent back to the minors. Now, with Frazier gone and Jared Triolo also off the roster, Peguero is positioned to play a versatile role in Pittsburgh’s infield during this important stretch of the season.

Versatility and Performance Shape Peguero’s Role

While with the Indianapolis minor league team, Peguero expanded his defensive capabilities, moving beyond shortstop to cover second base, corner infield spots, and even center field as needed. His adaptability has helped keep him in consideration for another chance in the major leagues. In Pittsburgh, Peguero will mainly serve as a bench player but may see action at every infield position, given the lack of other available infielders besides the starters on the active roster. This flexibility is expected to give him meaningful playing time during the series against Chicago.

Final Opportunity to Cement Place on the Roster

In 2023, Peguero received his only real opportunity to start regularly in the majors, posting a 73 wRC+ with a .653 OPS but struggling with a 31.5% strikeout rate. Following the trade deadline, the Pirates acquired Cam Devanney, who is likely to take over as the everyday shortstop, especially with the probable departure of Isiah Kiner-Falefa. There may also be an opening at third base if Ke’Bryan Hayes is traded, which leaves some room for Peguero to prove himself as a valuable infield option.

Entering 2025, Peguero had only one minor-league option remaining. If the Pirates’ general manager Ben Cherington decides not to keep him on the active roster this offseason, Peguero will face designation for assignment. This promotion, therefore, represents a critical, potentially final chance for him to secure a long-term role with the team.

Challenges Highlighted by Recent Statistics

Peguero’s Triple-A performance this year has been underwhelming, with an 82 wRC+, five home runs, and a .685 OPS. On a positive note, his strikeout rate has improved, dropping to 19.4%, but his hard-hit rate has declined to 37.2%, and his barrel rate remains low at just 3.5%. These numbers underline the challenges he faces in proving he can be a productive player at the major league level.

Implications for Pittsburgh’s 2026 Plans

Although still only 24 years old, Peguero’s remaining options are limited, making this promotion a critical moment in his career. The Pirates appear committed to giving him a fair opportunity to earn a spot for the 2026 season, especially with their urgent need to replace Adam Frazier’s contributions in the infield. How he performs in the coming months will likely determine whether he remains part of Pittsburgh’s future plans or becomes expendable.
