NBA Champion Slams Chris Paul Ranked Above James Harden and Westbrook: “It’s a Crime” in Latest NBA Rankings
James Harden's NBA ranking debate intensifies as CP3 controversially ranks above MVPs in Bleacher Report's Top 100 list.

Bleacher Report’s latest Top 100 NBA players list has ignited intense debate, particularly regarding the positioning of Chris Paul. Jeff Teague, a former NBA player known for bold opinions, voiced strong disagreement over the rankings, specifically questioning Chris Paul’s placement at number 30, which put him ahead of several MVPs and Hall of Fame talents. This ranking sparked controversy, especially concerning where James Harden and Russell Westbrook were positioned.

Disputes Over Ranking Chris Paul Above Harden and Westbrook

On the Club 520 Podcast, Teague expressed disbelief that Chris Paul ranked higher than James Harden, who was placed 34th, and Russell Westbrook, ranked 48th. Both Harden and Westbrook have MVP awards and led the league in major statistical categories during their careers, with stretches of dominance some argue surpass Paul’s achievements. Teague was clear in his criticism:

CP is higher than James Harden and Russell Westbrook, it’s a crime.

His frustration focused on Paul being ranked above these two MVP-caliber players, not on Paul’s overall 30th spot. When asked about Chris Paul’s rank compared to Vince Carter, who did not crack the top 30, Teague said,

I mean, they’re about the same to me.

Allen Iverson and Steve Nash Also Rank Lower Than Expected

Further controversy arose over Allen Iverson’s 36th place ranking, which is below Paul’s. Iverson is celebrated as a cultural icon and one of the most influential players of his generation. He led his team to an NBA Finals appearance and earned an MVP award, four scoring titles, and three steals titles. Teague’s reaction was one of disbelief:

So, you think CP better than Allen Iverson? I’m never rolling. You get an MVP…I’m dead,

Similarly, Steve Nash, a two-time MVP and known for his offensive leadership, was ranked 35th, just behind Paul. Teague found this baffling, stating,

CP higher than Steve Nash, I’m dead.

Jason Kidd’s Ranking Closer to Paul’s Draws Less Criticism

Jason Kidd was ranked 33rd, just three spots below Chris Paul, which Teague accepted more readily. However, if given the choice to build a team from scratch, Teague admitted he would choose Kidd over Paul without hesitation. Despite his disappointment with the rankings, Teague himself was not included in the list, reflecting a sentiment shared by many fans and former players who believe the list fails to fully represent players’ careers, legacies, and accolades.

Impact of Rankings on Player Legacies and Fan Reactions

This latest ranking has stirred anxiety and unease among NBA enthusiasts who see the list as misaligned with the achievements and influence of key players like James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Allen Iverson, and Steve Nash. The debate highlights the broader challenge of ranking NBA players where career achievements, influence, and playing style vary significantly. The ongoing discussion demonstrates how deeply fans and former players care about legacy and recognition in the sport.
