Ex-MMA Star Warns UFC Faces Crisis as Dustin Poirier, Islam Makhachev Retirement Looms
Dustin Poirier's UFC retirement raises concerns about future stars, but he plans to mentor new fighters.

Dustin Poirier’s impending retirement has sparked worry from a former MMA competitor about the future of the UFC, as several established stars seem poised to leave the sport soon. The departure of these key fighters raises questions about who will fill their shoes and sustain the promotion’s appeal.

In a recent episode of the WEIGHING IN podcast, ex-UFC athlete and Islam Makhachev’s teammate, Josh Thomson, discussed the potential void left by top fighters with co-host John McCarthy. Thomson expressed uncertainty about suitable replacements for fighters like Poirier, saying:

“I don’t really know [who’d replace the likes of Dustin Poirier in the UFC]. You’ve got Ilia [Topuria], that’s one to replace Dustin, and I don’t know if that’s a long replacement… You know Cub Swanson is coming to a close, Dustin is coming to a close, Justin is coming to a close. I’m going to be honest, I don’t think Islam fights much longer.” —Josh Thomson, Former UFC Fighter

Thomson continued by speculating on Islam Makhachev’s career trajectory, adding:

“I think if he wins [the welterweight title], he defends it one time, and I think he’ll be done… I’m simply saying, who do you have right now, in this sport? Who do you have in the UFC?” —Josh Thomson, Former UFC Fighter

Despite these concerns, John McCarthy believes that while losing these elite competitors would be difficult, the UFC has historically managed to replace legends with emerging talent. McCarthy cited past eras where fighters like Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell were eventually succeeded by the current crop of stars, suggesting this cycle will continue.

He identified reigning welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena as a promising athlete who might rise to the levels of fame seen by Poirier and Makhachev in the near future.

Dustin Poirier Plans to Support Upcoming Fighters After Stepping Away

Although the UFC will lose a major star with Poirier’s retirement, ‘The Diamond’ intends to contribute beyond his active fighting years by helping younger athletes develop their careers. After his final bout, Poirier shared glimpses of his goals to remain involved in the sport through mentorship and other efforts.

At his post-fight press conference, he explained why he carried the Acadiana flag and how representing his home region remains important to him even in retirement. Poirier revealed his interest in assisting future generations through his foundation, saying:

“Lafayette, Acadian area is different than anywhere else… You know, I’d love to continue to represent; however, that can be. With the [The Good Fight] foundation, helping these other fighters chase their dreams. 18-19 years ago, I felt like the bright lights in the UFC in Las Vegas were so far away, it was a pipe dream, and I made it happen through hard work, so I know these other kids can.” —Dustin Poirier, UFC Fighter

The Impact and What Lies Ahead for the UFC

The retirements of Poirier and Makhachev represent a turning point for the UFC, potentially creating a talent gap at the top level that could affect the promotion’s competitive landscape and fan engagement. Veterans like Cub Swanson and Justin, also nearing the end of their careers, add to concerns about losing several household names simultaneously.

Yet, history suggests the UFC often revitalizes its roster by promoting new stars who rise to prominence. Fighters such as Ilia Topuria and Jack Della Maddalena are among those viewed as future pillars for the sport, indicating a generational handoff is imminent.

As Poirier prepares to close his chapter as a fighter, his dedication to supporting young prospects highlights a hopeful pathway for the UFC’s ongoing growth, emphasizing development alongside competition. His efforts through The Good Fight foundation may help ease the transition, ensuring fresh talent continues pursuing their dreams on the sport’s biggest stage.
