F1 champion Jenson Button has openly backed the idea of Max Verstappen joining George Russell at Mercedes, amid mounting speculation about the Dutch driver’s future following the Austrian Grand Prix. This endorsement comes after confirmations from both Russell and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff that talks have taken place regarding Verstappen’s potential move to the team.
The possibility of Verstappen switching to Mercedes has sparked intense discussion in the paddock, compounded by uncertainties over Russell’s own standing within the team. The two drivers have engaged in a high-profile rivalry since last year’s Qatar Grand Prix, with tensions resurfacing at the recent Barcelona race. Despite this, Button believes Mercedes should secure the strongest driver lineup possible and considers the combination of Russell and Verstappen ideal.
I mean, the best in the world should be able to make that work for him,
Button remarked during an interview on Radio X’s The Chris Moyles Show.
He added that Russell is currently performing at an elite level and has proven himself highly competitive, especially when compared to former teammate Lewis Hamilton. Button considers Russell to be “world championship material” and questioned the logic of replacing him with Verstappen. While acknowledging the potential of Mercedes’ young prospect Kimi Antonelli, Button stressed that having two established, competitive drivers will be crucial with the sport entering a new regulatory phase.

Whereas George is there, he is good, and you need two very competitive drivers with this new era of the sport. Next year, obviously lots of regulation changes, car change, engine change. So, for me, George and Max would be a better line-up.
Evaluating Verstappen’s Potential Move to Mercedes
Despite Red Bull’s recent struggles, Button suggested that Verstappen faces a challenging decision in whether to join Mercedes, cautioning that such a move does not automatically guarantee continued championship success. Button highlighted Verstappen’s dominant performance at Red Bull, where the car has been specifically tailored to his driving style and where he remains unmatched.
It’s a tricky one for Max, because he’s in a position where he’s doing so well with Red Bull – they’ve given him so much over the years,
Button explained.
He emphasized the drastic performance gap Verstappen would face if transferring to Mercedes, pointing out the difference in qualifying results as a clear indicator of current team competitiveness. Button expressed uncertainty over whether Verstappen would adapt successfully to a car not engineered around him, which poses a significant risk.
They’re so far off him. I mean, him qualifying third or fourth, and them qualifying 18th. If he goes to Mercedes, it’s a different thing altogether. You know, that car is not going to be designed around him. So, is it going to work for him? I don’t know.
Context and Future Implications for Mercedes and Drivers
The prospect of Verstappen moving to Mercedes alongside Russell could reshape the dynamics of Formula 1’s top teams, especially as major regulatory changes approach, including new car designs and engine regulations next season. With both drivers possessing strong championship credentials, Mercedes could strengthen its performance and competitiveness if this partnership materializes.
Meanwhile, ongoing tensions between Russell and Verstappen could influence team harmony, but securing two leading talents may outweigh those concerns for Mercedes management. Fans and analysts will closely observe upcoming developments as the transfer talks evolve, with significant impacts expected on the 2026 F1 season and beyond.
