Jonas Valanciunas has decided to remain in the NBA by committing fully to the Denver Nuggets for the upcoming season, turning down a potential move to Greek basketball club Panathinaikos. The Lithuanian center expressed this intention on Monday, emphasizing his focus on fulfilling his contract and competing for a championship with Denver.
The idea of playing for Panathinaikos, closer to home, was very exciting to me, but that will have to wait. I am fully committed to honouring my contract with the Nuggets this season and will give it my all to compete for a championship,
Valanciunas said, per Donatas Urbonas of BasketNews.
Contract Details and Recent Performance Highlight His NBA Role
Valanciunas was acquired by the Nuggets earlier in July in a trade, despite still having two years and over $20 million left on his contract. Last season, Valanciunas played for Washington and Sacramento, averaging 10.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and two assists across 81 games. Denver expects him to serve as a reliable backup center, providing rest for superstar Nikola Jokic, who logged a career-high 36.7 minutes per game last season.
Nuggets Leadership Clarifies Valanciunas’ Status With the Team
Ben Tenzer, Denver’s executive vice president of basketball operations, addressed concerns about Valanciunas’ commitment during a news conference introducing new acquisition Cam Johnson. Tenzer stressed that discussions with Valanciunas have been positive and that the player is enthusiastic about joining the Nuggets.
There’s been nothing but healthy conversations in terms of him honouring his contract and him excited to be a Nugget,
Tenzer said.
When asked if there were any doubts about Valanciunas starting the season with Denver, Tenzer responded flatly, No concerns.
The Importance of Valanciunas’ Decision for the Nuggets’ Championship Bid
Valanciunas’ confirmation to stay with Denver resolves speculation about his future and solidifies the team’s frontcourt depth. His role in supporting Nikola Jokic could be vital as the Nuggets aim for another championship run. This commitment ensures the team retains experience and physical presence in the paint, while maintaining focus on their NBA goals rather than overseas opportunities.
