Moses Moody Says Warriors’ Kevon Looney ‘Can’t Be Replaced’ After Emotional Exit from Golden State

After spending over a decade with the Golden State Warriors, Kevon Looney recently signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. Reflecting on this significant change, Moses Moody, a close teammate of Looney’s, expressed how crucial Looney’s presence was on the Warriors, calling him irreplaceable both on and off the court.

Moses Moody Reflects on Kevon Looney’s Unique Role in the Warriors’ Locker Room

During a recent interview on 95.7 The Game’s Willard & Dibs, Moses Moody shared his thoughts on the emotional impact Looney’s departure has had on the Golden State team. Moody, who played alongside Looney for four seasons, described the strong connection they built beyond just basketball.

It’s going to be tough losing Loon in so many ways. He’s been here since I got here. The person he’s been for the team and me is immeasurable. He definitely can’t be replaced in any way — including the yoga room.

Moody recalled how, after joining the Warriors as a rookie in 2021, Looney quickly became a mentor and leader who helped him both personally and professionally. Moody noted the support Looney provided by encouraging him to participate in team activities that promoted wellness and bonding.

The way he looked out for me and brought [yoga] to my attention and made it accessible. He even paid for me to do it in my first year,

Moody said, highlighting the nurturing guidance he received from Looney.

Same thing with chapel. Going to the chapel before the games. He told me he was going, and it was up to me to go if I wanted to or not.

Looney’s On-Court Leadership Highlighted in 2023 Championship Run

Looney’s significance went beyond mentorship; he played a key role in the Warriors’ championship journey, making decisive contributions during critical moments. One such instance was in the 2023 Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, where Looney’s performance helped turn the tide of the series.

Facing off against veteran Steven Adams, Looney scored a career-high 21 points along with 12 rebounds, leading the Warriors to erase a 19-point deficit and secure a 2–0 series lead. The crowd’s chants of “MVP” during that game captured the passionate acknowledgment of his influence.

When we were going against Steven Adams, like this is what I do. It’s like all right, y’all don’t trust me?

I thought y’all would trust me. Y’all really don’t think I’m good no more? Whats the problem… either you trust me or you don’t.

Kevon Looney Opens Up About Leaving Golden State Due to Limited Opportunities

In a candid conversation on the Warriors Plus Minus podcast, Looney revealed that a lack of playing time and trust from the coaching staff contributed to his decision to move on from the Warriors. Despite his long tenure, he felt undervalued and sidelined during key moments.

I wouldn’t say that. Quinten (Post) is my guy. But it was anybody but me, it seemed like at this point,

Looney said about his role on the team.

It was not one moment. Even this year, probably in the playoffs, we’re going against Steven Adams. This is what I do.

Looney expressed frustration over not being given enough chances to contribute, emphasizing the emotional toll this dynamic caused.

You get sick of that at some point. When you’re proving yourself the first four or five years, that’s cool. But after 10 years, it’s like, ‘Alright, either you trust me or you don’t.’

Veteran Presence Poised to Influence the New Orleans Pelicans’ Future

Looney’s move to the New Orleans Pelicans marks a shift toward providing veteran leadership on a younger team aiming to reshape its culture. His championship experience and steady presence will likely be valuable assets for the Pelicans as they build toward future success.

Moses Moody’s comments underscore the deep loss felt in Golden State, illustrating how difficult it is to replace not just Looney’s skills but also his role as a mentor and emotional anchor within the Warriors organization.
