Damian Lillard Opens Up: Why Returning to Portland Was an Easy Decision After Buyout
Damian Lillard returns to Portland, bringing excitement as the city warmly welcomes their superstar back home.

Damian Lillard has officially rejoined the Portland Trail Blazers after spending two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, returning to a city and organization familiar to him. The seven-time All-Star made the move following a buyout, describing his decision to come back to Portland as straightforward and supported by those close to him.

Why Lillard Found Returning to Portland an Easy Choice

At his return press conference, Lillard revealed the personal process behind his decision. Unlike previous choices that required deep consideration and advice, this one felt natural and simple.

“Usually, when I have to make a decision, I put a lot of thought into it. I ask a lot of questions of the people around me, but this was a decision that wasn’t hard at all for me to make. And the people that I know love me and care about me; it was an easy piece of advice for them to give. It was easy for them to support,”

Lillard shared.

The former Trail Blazers star, who spent the first 11 seasons of his career with Portland from 2012 to 2023 before being traded to Milwaukee, expressed gratitude for returning at what he sees as an ideal moment.

“So, like I said, I’m just thankful to be back. And it just feels like the perfect situation at the perfect time. So I’m just happy to be back,”

he added.

Lillard Reflects on Injury Challenges and Recovery

During the previous season, Lillard endured a torn Achilles tendon in the Bucks’ first-round playoff loss to the Indiana Pacers, a setback that cut short his postseason play and brought uncertainty about his basketball future. Speaking candidly about the injury, Lillard highlighted his mental resilience through that difficult period.

“Everybody else had more pity for me than I did. The PT is about to cry… I didn’t cry. Talking to Aaron Rodgers and KD and Rudy Gay, all these guys that experienced it. I never had that moment of pity with none of my injuries,”

he stated.

The Significance of Lillard’s Comeback for the Trail Blazers

Returning to Portland carries weight beyond just a change of jersey for Lillard. Known for his leadership and long-standing history with the Blazers, his comeback represents a chance at redemption and continuity in a familiar setting. Financially secure with contracts totaling $141 million over the next two seasons across both teams, Lillard’s focus appears to be on proving his resilience and impact on the court. His return is sure to energize the franchise and its fan base, signaling hope for renewed competitiveness in upcoming seasons.
