Warriors Open to Matching Offers Amid Jonathan Kuminga’s Restricted Free Agency Drama
Golden State executive discusses Jonathan Kuminga's restricted free agency options amidst cap challenges and roster-building considerations.

Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency has reached a critical point, with the Golden State Warriors evaluating their options ahead of the new season. The forward can either re-sign with Golden State, accept a qualifying offer worth $7.9 million to play next season, or sign an offer sheet with another NBA team. Should Kuminga choose the latter, the Warriors have the right to match the offer and retain him or allow him to leave and negotiate a sign-and-trade deal.

Warriors’ Approach to Contract Negotiations

According to a Warriors front office executive, the team is proceeding cautiously due to salary cap constraints.

“We’re trying to be responsible. With the aprons and hard caps and all of that, you can’t just throw money around. We still love Jonathan. We’re hopeful we can figure out a way to strike a balance that works for him and for us. But we’re not going to compromise our roster-building ability now, or in the future. We have to be responsible in the way we build our team,”

the executive explained.

Kuminga’s Performance and Team Outcome Last Season

Last season, Jonathan Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists over 47 games, shooting 45.4% from the field, 30.5% from three-point range, and 66.8% from the free-throw line. The Warriors advanced past the first round of the 2025 playoffs by defeating the Houston Rockets in seven games but were eliminated in the conference semifinals by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. Kuminga’s overall career averages stand at 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists since being selected seventh overall in the 2021 draft.

Uncertainty Surrounding Kuminga’s Future With the Warriors

Multiple sources reported to Hoops Wire that Kuminga may not want to continue his career in Golden State, adding to the uncertainty surrounding contract talks. The Warriors remain open to matching any offer sheet but are cautious about maintaining long-term roster flexibility under salary cap rules.

Implications for the Warriors and Next Steps

The ongoing negotiation regarding Jonathan Kuminga restricted free agency places the Warriors at a crossroads, balancing financial responsibility with retaining a promising young talent. The outcome will likely influence the team’s roster composition and salary cap strategy for upcoming seasons, while fans and analysts await news of whether Kuminga will stay or pursue opportunities elsewhere.
