Rockets Agree to One-Year, $3.1M Deal with Josh Okogie, Adding Defensive Depth to Roster
Josh Okogie signs a one-year, $3.1 million contract with the Rockets, bolstering their defensive options on the wing.

The Houston Rockets have finalized a one-year, $3.1 million agreement with free agent wing Josh Okogie, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. This deal reportedly matches Okogie’s minimum salary, valued at $3,080,921, bolstering the Rockets’ perimeter defense ahead of the season.

Okogie’s Recent Performance and Career Movements

Turning 27 this September, Josh Okogie began the 2024-25 season with the Phoenix Suns before being traded to Charlotte in the Nick Richards deal during January. Across both teams, Okogie appeared in 40 games, including seven starts, averaging 7.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals over 15.6 minutes per game. His shooting percentages stood at .443 from the field, .348 from three-point range, and .741 at the free-throw line.

Known for his versatility and defensive capabilities on the perimeter, Okogie demonstrated strong impact with the Hornets. During 274 minutes on the court, Charlotte recorded a +2.6 net rating, compared to a -13.7 rating when he was off the floor. Although the sample size was limited, these figures reinforce his defensive value.

Contract Details and Roster Adjustments Ahead of Signing

Okogie’s prior contract with Charlotte included a clause guaranteeing his $7.75 million salary for the 2025-26 season if he remained under contract through June 30. However, both parties agreed to extend this deadline to July 15 as the Hornets explored potential trades involving the 6’4” swingman. After failing to secure a trade, Charlotte waived Okogie last week.

To accommodate new roster moves, the Rockets waived Jeenathan Williams, who held a non-guaranteed contract, reducing their salary by approximately $3.6 million to stay below the first tax apron. This financial maneuver opened a spot for Okogie, whose deal will count around $2.3 million against Houston’s salary cap. The addition strengthens Houston’s wing defense options for the current season.

Implications for the Rockets’ Roster and Salary Cap Management

With this signing, the Rockets fill their 14th roster position but will not be able to add a 15th player without exceeding the hard salary cap apron, barring further cost-cutting moves. This likely limits their flexibility to make additional veteran minimum signings until later in the regular season, keeping their focus on maintaining a tight payroll while improving defensive depth.
