Patrick Mahomes Admits He Must Improve Deep Passing to Boost Chiefs’ 2025 Offense Potential
Patrick Mahomes focuses on deep passing improvement to enhance the Chiefs' offense and chase a potential MVP award.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as one of the NFL’s top players, openly recognized his need to enhance his deep passing to elevate the Chiefs’ offense in 2025. Speaking with reporters, Mahomes said he must improve his ability to complete throws farther downfield to open up more opportunities for the team’s playmakers.

I’ve got to be better at throwing the ball down the field,

Mahomes told reporters.

In order for the offense to be great, you’ve got to complete those passes. It starts with me and giving those guys chances, but if we can do that, it’s going to open up the offense in general.

Chiefs Seek to Revive Big-Play Offense This Offseason

ESPN reporter Adam Teicher revealed that the Chiefs have focused their offseason efforts on increasing deep passing attempts during practice sessions, aiming to restore the explosive style the offense showcased earlier in Mahomes’ career. Despite a dominant 15-2 record in 2024, Kansas City’s offense showed signs of reduced big-play potential.

Teicher’s analysis noted the Chiefs had just 12 completions on passes thrown 20 yards or more beyond the line of scrimmage last season, ranking near the bottom of the league, while their 47 attempts from that range were also among the fewest.

With speedy receivers like Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Hollywood Brown leading the team’s receiving unit, Kansas City hopes to capitalize on their ability to stretch defenses and create explosive scoring chances.

Coaches Push for Commitment to Deep-Throw Mentality

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy emphasized that simply discussing the importance of deep passing is not enough. He said the team’s mindset must consistently include aggressive attempts to maximize those opportunities during practice and games alike.

It’s our job as coaches to emphasize it more and then let these guys go out there, and then their mindset, too, is cutting it loose every now and then and not every one is going to be perfect [or] complete, but … so far up to this point it’s been beautiful with the attack mindset.

This determined approach aims to restore the Chiefs’ offensive explosiveness, allowing Mahomes to unlock the full potential of his talented receiving corps.

Enhancing Deep Passing Could Boost Mahomes’ MVP Prospects

If Kansas City succeeds in incorporating more effective deep passes, Patrick Mahomes could be a strong contender for his third NFL MVP award in the 2025 season. Improving the deep passing game is seen as key to expanding the offense, creating more scoring opportunities, and maintaining the Chiefs’ status as one of the league’s premier teams.
