Nearly a month after the NBA free agency period began, Jonathan Kuminga is still tied to the Golden State Warriors amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future. Despite interest from teams such as the Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, and Phoenix Suns, Kuminga’s status as a restricted free agent complicates any potential move. The Warriors are reluctant to lose him without compensation but are also hesitant to commit fully to his salary demands, while Kuminga himself would prefer a trade if possible.
Limited Movement in Trade Negotiations and Contract Talks
According to Chris Mannix, who relayed insights to Rachel Nicole of Sports Illustrated after contacting reliable sources, there has been almost no progress regarding Kuminga’s next contract. Mannix suggested that a short-term agreement with the Warriors remains the most likely outcome, as it would allow Kuminga and his representatives to preserve their standing.
My guess still with Kuminga is that he and the Warriors agree to some kind of short-term deal. I think it’ll be longer than one year because I think he wants — and his people want — to save face on a new deal there,
Mannix speculated.
Even though the Brooklyn Nets had shown some interest initially, the opportunity has not advanced. Washington could be a viable destination, but negotiations have not gained traction. Similarly, the Phoenix Suns would like to acquire Kuminga but lack the draft picks and assets necessary to finalize such a trade.

Warriors’ Perspective and Potential Contract Terms
Mannix also noted that while other young players like Quinton Grimes and Josh Giddy have secured new deals, Kuminga remains an exception. The Warriors see him as a strong talent but question whether he fits into their long-term plans.
Other guys like Quinton Grimes, Josh Giddy, I’m pretty sure they re-signed, as Kuminga was kind of the outlier there that he’s a really good young talent, and the Warriors really don’t see him as a long-term fit,
Mannix pointed out.
When speculating on the terms of Kuminga’s expected new contract, Mannix predicted a deal in the range of two years and $50 million. There is also the possibility that the contract could extend to three years and $60 million, including a player option for the final year.
I think he winds up back there. I don’t know when it’s going to happen or how it’s going to happen, but my guess is that it’s like a 2-year, $50 million deal, something in that range. [It could possibly be] three years, $60 [million] maybe, if you want, with a player option on the third year,
Mannix predicted.
Market Dynamics and Organization Support for Kuminga’s Return
Brett Siegel of Clutch Points also supports the idea that a short-term contract is the most sensible solution for both Kuminga and the Warriors, emphasizing a lack of current trade market opportunities. Siegel highlighted that key figures within the Warriors organization, including owner Joe Lacob, are in favor of re-signing Kuminga, which strongly suggests a reunion is imminent.
Looking ahead, sources indicate that rival teams are anticipating Kuminga to re-enter trade discussions before the February trade deadline, leaving options open but emphasizing the current importance of resolving a contract with Golden State first.
