How Matthew Tkachuk Nearly Joined the Hurricanes in 2022—The NHL Trade That Almost Changed Everything
Matthew Tkachuk Hurricanes trade close; Panthers' landing reshapes NHL landscape permanently, leading to Florida's ultimate Stanley Cup glory.

Matthew Tkachuk’s arrival in Florida in 2022 marked the start of a dominant era for the Florida Panthers, who have since appeared in three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and won back-to-back championships. However, the Carolina Hurricanes came very close to acquiring Tkachuk on that pivotal trade day, a move that could have dramatically reshaped the NHL landscape. This close call was revealed by NHL insider Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, highlighting just how narrowly the Hurricanes missed out on one of hockey’s premier players.

Intense Competition Between Florida and Carolina on Trade Day

According to Seravalli, the trade negotiations unfolded with tension and uncertainty as both teams vied to secure Tkachuk’s services.

“And the other fun thing to think about, as we close out here, is just how close the Carolina Hurricanes were,”

Seravalli explained.

“As that Friday was shaping up, I can remember going back and forth with sources again; very quiet period typically on the hockey calendar. And it was down to the wire between Florida and Carolina. I think there were varying points throughout that day that the Carolina Hurricanes thought they might be able to get it done with Matthew Tkachuk. And he ends up landing in Florida and changing his life and that franchise forever.”

The competitive nature of that day illustrates how finely balanced the decision was, and how the NHL’s future standing could have shifted had the Hurricanes prevailed.

Florida’s Impact Since Landing Tkachuk

Since joining the Panthers, Tkachuk has been a key figure in their success, blending physicality with elite skill. The 27-year-old winger produces at a pace exceeding a point per game in the regular season, and he has maintained that high level into the playoffs. His presence has been integral in Florida’s ability to eliminate the Hurricanes in two of the last three Eastern Conference Finals, adding a personal frustration to Carolina’s playoff challenges.

Carolina’s Roster Moves Following the Missed Opportunity

After missing out on Tkachuk, the Hurricanes continued to cycle through notable star wingers such as Jake Guentzel and Mikko Rantanen. Their current plan centers on newly signed Nikolaj Ehlers, who joined Carolina with a six-year, $51 million contract in free agency. This shift demonstrates how Carolina has adapted its strategy as it attempts to build a championship-caliber roster following the trade near-miss.

The Lasting Impact of the Trade Decision

While fans and analysts can only speculate how the situation might have played out if Tkachuk had become a Hurricane, the reality is that the Florida Panthers have reaped tremendous rewards from the trade. Acquiring one of the game‘s top players during his prime has propelled Florida to elite status in the NHL. Meanwhile, Carolina continues its search for consistent playoff success as it pursues new avenues to contend for a Stanley Cup.

This near-trade story underscores how a single transaction can alter the fortunes of entire franchises and the competitive balance of the league itself, leaving a lasting impression on players, teams, and fans alike.
