Roquan Smith, a three-time first-team All-Pro inside linebacker, has applauded the Baltimore Ravens defense as the most talented unit he has ever been a part of. Coming off a season where Baltimore boasted the <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/football/nfl/”>NFL‘s best defense late in the year and ended as the top-ranked defensive team in 2023, Smith sees great potential for the 2025 season.
Smith emphasized the versatility and effectiveness of the defense, projecting a dynamic approach with multiple personnel combinations. He expressed enthusiasm about the collective skill and readiness of his teammates for the upcoming campaign.
I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of different combinations, whether that’s linebackers, safeties, D-ends or D-tackles,
Smith said.
This is probably the most talented defense I’ve been on. I’m excited about the opportunity to get out there with these guys and go to work.
Training Camp Intensity and Leadership from Smith
Arriving at training camp in excellent condition, Smith has taken on a leadership role, stressing the importance of focus and consistent effort during practices. While Baltimore has a strong roster, Smith is clear that on-paper talent must translate into performance when the players take the field.
On paper doesn’t mean much; it’s all about what you do on the field,
he stated.
Today was a great start for us. We’ve got a loaded secondary, but it’s not about paper, it’s about what you do out on the field. Those guys know that as well. We’re excited about the opportunity to keep getting better.

Injury Update: Jake Hummel Temporarily Out With Hand Injury
The Ravens opened their first training camp practice nearly at full strength, except for inside linebacker Jake Hummel, who missed action due to a non-football-related cut on his hand. Head Coach John Harbaugh estimated Hummel’s return within approximately one week.
Additionally, safety Ar’Darius Washington remained sidelined as he continues recovery for an Achilles injury, and rookie offensive lineman Emery Jones Jr. is out with a shoulder injury unrelated to football activities.
Running Back Depth Bolstered by Keaton Mitchell’s Return
The Ravens’ running game, already strong with Derrick Henry and Justice Hill, appears poised to become even more formidable with the resurgence of Keaton Mitchell. After recovering from a knee injury that limited him to just 15 carries last season, Mitchell has looked explosive and quick during OTAs and minicamp sessions.
During early training camp drills, Mitchell showcased his speed and agility, nearly completing a long touchdown run that highlighted his dynamic skill set. His bright cleats have become a symbol of his energetic presence on the field.
He’s flying around. He’s back the old Keaton – being fast, being ‘Supersonic,’
Henry remarked.
Happy to see him get his feet back under himself and be healthy, and he’s going to help us a lot this year.
With Henry expected to remain the primary ball carrier and Hill playing a key role as a receiver and blocker, Mitchell’s potential to contribute more touches could add an extra dimension to Baltimore’s offensive arsenal this season.
Inside Linebacker Competition Heats Up: Simpson and Buchanan Impress
At the inside linebacker position alongside Smith, both Trenton Simpson and rookie Teddye Buchanan are vying for increased playing time, drawing Smith’s attention with their impressive physical development and quick grasp of the Ravens’ defensive schemes.
Smith, reflecting on their athletic condition, appeared somewhat envious of their muscle tone and preparation.
Those boys are yoked up. I never looked like that,
he joked.
Whatever plan they’re on, I probably need to look into it.
Simpson, who started the 2024 season but saw his role diminish, is motivated to reclaim substantial playing time after spending valuable offseason hours with Smith. The veteran linebacker praised Simpson’s character and work ethic.
He’s the type of guy you’d want to marry your sister,
Smith said.
Last year was like a rookie year for him, because he didn’t play [the year before] with [Patrick Queen] being here. The step he’s going to take this upcoming season, I’m very excited to see it, and I’m excited for him to show everyone as well. He’s got a lot of potential.
Buchanan, drafted in the fourth round from Cal, has quickly adapted to the NFL environment, impressing coaches and teammates alike with his mental acuity and rapid understanding of the defensive system.
He’s well advanced for a rookie,
Smith noted.
The way he processed things throughout the springtime, the way things clicked for him mentally. I think he’s going to be a really good player in this league.
Looking Ahead: Can 2025 Become a Landmark Season for Baltimore’s Defense?
With Roquan Smith leading a highly talented and deep defensive unit, the Baltimore Ravens have built strong momentum heading into the 2025 season. The combination of Smith’s leadership, the growth of younger players like Simpson and Buchanan, and the overall versatility of the personnel sets high expectations for defensive success.
Should the team translate its on-paper talent into consistent, high-level performances, this defense may indeed achieve a legendary status in Baltimore’s storied NFL history. The integration of an energized running back group also adds to the team’s balanced competitiveness for 2025 and beyond.
