Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is preparing for a pivotal 2025 NFL season by honing crucial aspects of his game, emphasizing steady progress rather than instant success. Entering his fifth year under a lucrative $55 million annual contract, Lawrence aims to overcome past inconsistencies and injury challenges to fulfill the expectations placed on him as a generational talent.
New Coaching Staff Brings Fresh Perspective to Lawrence’s Development
This season, Lawrence is working alongside a new leadership trio consisting of head coach Liam Coen, offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, and quarterbacks coach Spencer Whipple, all focused on elevating his performance. Their goal is to guide Lawrence to reach the elite level expected from a player of his caliber and potential.
Backup Quarterback Nick Mullens Plays Unexpected Role in Lawrence’s Progress
Interestingly, a major influence in Lawrence’s growth has been his backup quarterback, Nick Mullens. With extensive experience in Kevin O’Connell’s system, Mullens has helped Lawrence adjust to the offensive scheme, which mirrors strategies Mullens recently played under in Los Angeles and Minnesota.
I mean, he’s a guy that, like I said, he’s really smart,
Lawrence said.
He plays with a lot of anticipation, reading coverages. He’s really good. He’s on time.
His feet are always synced up. So, it was something I watched early on when we started, just his footwork, because it is the same system pretty much that he was in.

Lawrence also appreciated Mullens’ confidence in the offense, which reassured him early on during spring preparations.
Hearing him just when I first came in, his confidence and how he feels about the system is like, man, you’re going love it. You can trust it. The progressions are great,
Lawrence explained.
You just keep trusting it. Trust your feet. Stay on time. All those things.
Training Focus: Using Footwork and Eyes to Gain an Edge
A major part of Lawrence’s offseason work has centered on improving his footwork and eye discipline, vital skills that enhance his effectiveness as a passer. He has placed special emphasis on using his eyes strategically to mislead defenders and create throwing lanes.
Just using, exactly like you said, my eyes as a weapon and not giving the defensive tip on anything of where I’m going with the ball and trying to use my eyes to move people or to open up certain windows or whatever,
Lawrence said.
It’s been something that a lot of quarterbacks do and I never really know.
Lawrence noted this technique was not a significant focus during his earlier NFL experience under previous Jacksonville coaches Urban Meyer and Doug Pederson.
It’s something that I’ve never really been taught necessarily, but to hear their perspective on certain plays and the emphasis on certain plays to use your eyes, especially to open windows, is something where it makes sense, but it’s just if you’re not told to do it, sometimes you don’t think about it,
Lawrence explained.
And then now, learning those little things that can help make the windows two yards bigger,
Lawrence continued.
I mean, that’s a huge difference in this league. So, it’s helped a lot, and [those quarterbacks] taught me a lot about stuff like that.”
Looking Ahead to What This Means for Lawrence and the Jaguars
As the 2025 season approaches, Trevor Lawrence’s focused development on footwork, reading defenses, and trusting the offensive system signals a determined effort to transform from a young, inconsistent player into one of the NFL’s premier quarterbacks. His ability to integrate lessons from experienced teammates and coaches, especially within a new coaching framework, could have a significant impact on the Jaguars’ success in the coming season.
Lawrence’s progression underscores the reality that growth in the NFL, particularly for quarterbacks, is often a gradual process requiring patience, strategic skill-building, and adapting to evolving offensive philosophies. How effectively he applies these lessons may well define his career trajectory and the Jaguars’ fortunes in 2025 and beyond.
