Sean O’Malley Admits He’s ‘Still Delusional’ but Confident to Beat Merab Dvalishvili in UFC Trilogy Fight

Sean O’Malley, the former UFC bantamweight champion, recently expressed renewed confidence despite his recent setback against Merab Dvalishvili. Their latest fight took place at UFC 316 in June, where O’Malley was submitted by Dvalishvili for the second consecutive time, following a previous loss at the Sphere event in September 2024. This rivalry has become a defining challenge in O’Malley’s career, driving the American fighter’s determination for a third encounter in the octagon.

O’Malley entered the recent bout having eliminated several distractions from his life, recovered fully from a torn labrum sustained before their last fight, and completed a comprehensive training camp unlike the one he had before UFC 306. Despite these improvements, he was still unable to overcome Dvalishvili, which led many observers to doubt his chances in a potential trilogy fight.

O’Malley Views the Upcoming Third Bout as a Balanced Opportunity

On social media, O’Malley described Dvalishvili’s upcoming title defense as something akin to a coin flip, indicating his belief that the next fight could go either way. Although he is currently not in line for a title shot, O’Malley is closely watching UFC 320’s co-main event in October, where a victory by challenger Cory Sandhagen might open the path for his eventual return to championship contention.

O’Malley still holds onto the belief that he can defeat Dvalishvili despite his previous losses. He acknowledged that this hope may seem overly optimistic but cited Max Holloway’s experience as motivation. Holloway lost twice to Dustin Poirier before finally securing a win in their third fight, showing that persistence can change the outcome in a rivalry.

I truly believed that I was going to go out and make Merab look stupid,

O’Malley said reflecting on his defeat in Newark.

I’m still so delusional that I still think I can beat Merab.

Max Holloway beat Dustin in his third fight, lost the first two. So never say never,

O’Malley added.

Changes in O’Malley’s Lifestyle and Mindset After Recent Fights

Following UFC 316, O’Malley chose to reverse many of the lifestyle adjustments he had made in preparation for his last title challenge. Previously, he had removed marijuana use and significantly reduced his social media activity to focus more intently on training and recovery. However, with the latest fight behind him, O’Malley has returned to his previous habits.

He recently revealed on Instagram Stories that he spent the past six months off social media and kept a low profile regarding content creation. Now, feeling recharged and motivated, he is eager to resume producing content and new business projects.

Alright guys, last six months I have been completely off social media,

O’Malley explained.

I was not really creating a lot of content.

But I feel rejuvenated. I feel like I am excited to create content again. So we are gonna be posting a lot of content. I’ve got a new business coming out.

I am excited to get the creative juices going,

he added.

Significance of the UFC Trilogy Fight in the Bantamweight Division

Sean O’Malley’s persistence in seeking a third fight against Merab Dvalishvili underscores a compelling storyline in the UFC bantamweight division. His willingness to admit his vulnerabilities while maintaining confidence captures the resilience needed in mixed martial arts at the highest level. If O’Malley can overcome Dvalishvili in their trilogy, it could reshape the bantamweight title landscape and revive his standing as a top contender.

With UFC 320 approaching and other contenders like Cory Sandhagen stepping up, the bantamweight division is set for dynamic developments. O’Malley’s ongoing rivalry with Dvalishvili will likely be a focal point for fans and analysts watching the championship scene evolve in the coming months.
