Cowboys’ Brevyn Spann-Ford Sharpens Receiving Skills, Poised to Rise in Tight End Depth Chart

During the Dallas Cowboys’ ongoing training camp in Oxnard, tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford has been making significant strides, drawing attention for his improving receiving skills. Amid a competitive tight end group led by Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker, Spann-Ford’s enhancements in pass-catching position him to climb the depth chart this season.

Transitioning from Blocking to a More Versatile Role

Traditionally known for his blocking ability rather than receiving, Spann-Ford has focused on expanding his skill set throughout the offseason. His physical presence at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds provides a notable advantage as a passing target, and his efforts to improve routes and catching technique have been evident during camp practices.

I came from a primarily run offense in college, so I feel like I kind of came in with a little bit of a head start on my in terms of run scheme and things like that,

Spann-Ford said.

But it was really just growing my toolbox in the receiver game. Releases, break points, using my hands, using my body to get open. Then also just catching the football period. Just continuing to work on that every day.

Building on Experience and Earning Opportunities

Spann-Ford saw some action last season when Jake Ferguson was sidelined due to injury, which provided him valuable NFL game experience. This exposure has given him a foundation to build upon for the 2025 campaign, as he aims to contribute consistently in both the running and passing aspects of the Cowboys’ offense.

His improved receiving capabilities suggest he could soon surpass Luke Schoonmaker on the depth chart, offering head coach Brian Schottenheimer an expanded selection of tight end targets. With training camp underway, Spann-Ford’s continued progress could play a key role in shaping the team’s offensive options this season.
