DeWanna Bonner returns to Phoenix, eager to lead Mercury to another championship after her journey through WNBA teams.

DeWanna Bonner returns to Phoenix this season, bringing years of experience and a strong desire to contribute to the Mercury’s success. After beginning her WNBA career with Phoenix for a decade, Bonner had brief periods with Connecticut and Indiana before rejoining the Mercury earlier this month to help lead the team forward.

Reflecting on Her Journey and Embracing the Present

Bonner expressed acceptance of her career path, emphasizing that each step helped shape her current position with the Mercury. Although her time in Indiana ended with her release, she chose to focus on what lies ahead rather than dwell on disappointments.

“I wouldn’t do anything differently. I think my journey is my journey and I’m going to accept that,”

Bonner said.

“It carried me to where I am now in Phoenix and it happened that way for a reason.”

Clearing Up Misconceptions About Her Role Off the Bench

Despite reports claiming Bonner was unhappy coming off the bench, she dismissed those as inaccurate. Starting the season with Indiana, she quickly moved into third place on the WNBA’s career scoring list and reiterated her willingness to play any role needed by the team.

“That wasn’t ever the issue, that’s never been me,”

Bonner stated.

“I have no problems coming off the bench. I have never been that player. I don’t feel like I have that reputation.”

Making an Impact Early in Her Return to Phoenix

The Mercury recently began a five-game road trip, starting with a loss in New York where Bonner scored nine points. Her coach, Nate Tibbetts, praised her versatility and the immediate impact she has made since her return, highlighting her ability to play multiple positions and contribute significantly on both ends of the floor.

“DB is a really good addition for us. She can play the two, the three and four and maybe even some five, depending on different lineups that, we’ll look at starting here, moving forward,”

Tibbetts said.

“She’s won championships. You know, her second game with us, we go on to Golden State, have some injuries and she goes for 22 and 11. You know, we’re not winning that game without her so she’s been a huge pickup for us.”

Preparing for a Return to Indiana and Facing the Unknown

The Mercury are scheduled to visit Indiana soon, marking a potentially emotional moment for Bonner. Though she is unsure of the fans’ reception, she remains focused on competing and contributing to her team’s efforts regardless of external reactions.

“I’m just going to go out and do my job,”

she said.

“They have every right to go out and do what they want to do, I’m just going to go out and compete with my team.”

Balancing Career with Family During Her Time Away

While her Indiana stint was brief, Bonner valued the opportunity it gave her to be closer to her young twin daughters, who will soon turn eight. This proximity allowed her more family time than before despite professional challenges.

“I got to spend more time with them then before,”

she shared.

Looking to Lead Phoenix Mercury to More Championships

Having helped Phoenix win two championships since being drafted in 2009, Bonner aims to elevate the team again. The warm welcome she received upon her return rejuvenated her enthusiasm, reminding her of the strong connection she still has with the franchise and its community.

“Getting back to Phoenix after so long, the love and the welcome that I had was very much needed and appreciated,”

Bonner remarked.

“Coming back to people that I know.”

Adjusting to Changes While Recognizing Familiar Faces

Returning to the arena where she spent 10 years, Bonner noticed significant changes in the building and surroundings but found comfort in seeing familiar fans and some front office staff members.

“I walk into the arena for game day and I had no idea where I was going, and it was crazy because I was there for 10 years every day,”

she stated.

“Everything is different, but the fans are still the same, a couple people in the front office are the same.”

Bonner’s Return Brings Experience and Versatility to Phoenix

DeWanna Bonner’s return to Phoenix comes at a pivotal time for the Mercury, as her leadership and adaptability offer vital support during a challenging season. With her history of championship success and commitment to the team, Bonner is positioned to play a crucial role in the Mercury’s pursuit of another title.
