During a high-intensity training camp session on Friday at St. John Fisher University, Buffalo Bills safety Taylor Rapp made a significant statement by intercepting quarterback Josh Allen twice. This display underscored the defense’s renewed emphasis on creating turnovers, a key focus as the team prepares for the upcoming <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/football/nfl/”>NFL season.

Defensive Coordinator Stresses Need for More Takeaways

Defensive coordinator Bobby Babich voiced his dissatisfaction with the defense’s current takeaway production before practice. Babich said to reporters,

“I will say this. In two days, we have one takeaway, which we are not happy with,”

highlighting the pressure on the defense to improve. Since head coach Sean McDermott’s arrival in 2017, forcing turnovers has been a cornerstone of the team‘s defensive philosophy. Last year, with Babich in his first season as coordinator, the Bills ranked third in the NFL for takeaways, racking up 32 and boasting a league-best +24 turnover margin.

Rapp Seizes Opportunities During Practice Drills

Rapp, who previously intercepted Lamar Jackson in a critical playoff game, reinforced his reputation with two interceptions during Friday’s 7-on-7 drills. A miscommunication between Allen and his likely target, Elijah Moore, presented the first chance. Allen’s pass lingered near the sideline, allowing Rapp to sprint and make a diving catch.

The second interception came shortly after, when defensive end Joey Bosa pressured Allen, forcing an overthrow intended for tight end Zach Davidson. Rapp was perfectly positioned to grab the errant throw. Reflecting on his performance, Rapp said,

“Every DB knows that it comes in bunches, so it’s great to get a few under my belt,”

during his post-practice interview on One Bills Live.

Veteran Leadership and Team Expectations

Entering his third year with the Bills, Rapp’s experience has become a valuable asset among the team’s larger roster. Babich emphasized the rigor within the squad, stating,

“The guys know the standard and they know if they haven’t met it. And then, they know if they have met it.”

Rapp’s performance on Friday clearly reflected this standard, as he demonstrated the leadership and skill expected from a seasoned player.

Bills’ Defensive Mindset Gains Momentum Ahead of Season

This practice session not only showcased Rapp’s individual talents but also emphasized the Bills’ collective determination to dominate defensively. The takeaway-focused mindset championed by Babich appears to be taking hold, with players like Rapp leading the charge. As the team moves forward through training camp, maintaining this intensity and focus on forcing turnovers could prove crucial for the Bills’ success in the regular season.
