Max Verstappen Edges Out Piastri to Clinch Thrilling F1 Sprint Win in Belgium
Max Verstappen claims F1 Belgium sprint victory, overtaking Piastri early and maintaining lead for the entire race.

Max Verstappen claimed victory in the Formula 1 sprint race in Belgium on Saturday, July 26, by skillfully using the slipstream on the opening lap to overtake Oscar Piastri. Verstappen maintained his lead for the remainder of the race at Spa-Francorchamps, securing his Max Verstappen F1 Sprint Win ahead of Piastri, who finished second. Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc completed the top four positions, respectively.

Verstappen reflected on his performance after the race, expressing satisfaction with the result.

“That’s the only opportunity we’re going to get against them, and we took it. For us, it was a great result to keep them behind. I’m very happy with what we did.”

Race Dynamics and Competitors’ Performances at Spa

Oscar Piastri started on pole after dominating Friday’s sprint qualifying with a strong time nearly half a second faster than Verstappen and title rival Norris. Verstappen’s Red Bull benefitted from running a lower downforce setup compared to the McLarens, which gave him a speed advantage on the long straights of Spa-Francorchamps.

This setup proved crucial as Verstappen took advantage of the slipstream effect to pass Piastri at the top of the hill early in the race. Charles Leclerc also capitalized on the situation, moving ahead of Norris into third place as the McLaren driver fell back to fourth. Piastri stayed close behind Verstappen, keeping pressure on the leader.

By the fourth lap, Norris had regained third position by overtaking Leclerc at the hilltop but was still over two seconds behind his teammate. Once in cleaner air, Norris started closing in on Piastri, who remained within a second of Verstappen but could not find a way past.

With less than a lap to go, both McLarens used the Drag Reduction System (DRS) to try to challenge Verstappen. However, the Dutch driver held firm and crossed the finish line first, marking the team’s first sprint race win since Christian Horner’s departure as team principal.

Supporting Standings and Upcoming Main Race Outlook

Esteban Ocon finished just outside the podium in fifth place, closely followed by Carlos Sainz in sixth. Oliver Bearman delivered a strong performance for Haas by securing seventh place, while Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Liam Lawson completed the top ten finishers.

Attention now turns to qualifying for the main Belgian Grand Prix race, scheduled to begin less than four hours after the sprint. Weather forecasts suggest rain could play a role during Sunday’s race, adding further uncertainty to the weekend’s action. The Grand Prix will commence at 9 a.m. ET with live coverage on ESPN.
