Ryan McMahon Chooses No. 19 as Yankees Jersey Number Ahead of Debut, Joining Iconic Legacy

The New York Yankees’ newest addition at the trade deadline, third baseman Ryan McMahon, has selected his jersey number as he prepares for his debut with the team. McMahon will wear No. 19, a number left open after Pablo Reyes departed from the organization in June, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

History and Significance of Number 19 in Yankees Tradition

For many players joining the Yankees, choosing a jersey number can be challenging due to the team’s extensive history of retiring 22 numbers. Having previously worn No. 1 with the Colorado Rockies in his rookie year of 2017, McMahon switched to No. 24 in 2018, which he wore during most of his tenure with Colorado. Yet, No. 24 is already worn by Yankees star Jasson Domínguez, and No. 1 has been retired since 1986 to honor Billy Martin, making No. 19 the available choice.

McMahon becomes the 50th player in Yankees history to wear No. 19. Past notable wearers include Masahiro Tanaka (2014–2020), Yankees manager Aaron Boone during his playing days (2003), Dave Righetti (1981–1990), Fritz Peterson (1967–1974), Whitey Ford (1950), and Johnny Murphy (1934–1946), connecting McMahon to a distinguished legacy.

McMahon’s Role and Expectations with the Yankees

New York is eager for McMahon to bring renewed energy and consistent performance to third base. Under contract through 2027, the 30-year-old has demonstrated power at the plate, hitting 20 or more home runs each of the past five full seasons, and holds a career slash line of .240/.323/.420. This season, McMahon, a left-handed batter, has posted a .217 batting average with a .314 on-base percentage, 16 home runs, and 35 RBIs, alongside four Outs Above Average at third base.

After officially joining the Yankees’ 26-man roster, McMahon is set to make his team debut on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies, marking the next step in his Major League career in the Bronx.

Impact and Future Outlook for McMahon’s Yankees Tenure

By opting for a jersey number rich with Yankees history, Ryan McMahon aligns himself with the tradition and expectations of the franchise. His addition is viewed as a potential catalyst to stabilize third base and provide offensive contributions. As the season progresses, McMahon’s performance will be closely observed to assess how he complements the existing roster and aids the team’s quest for success.
