Lionel Messi MLS Suspension Impact: Millions Lost as Attendance and Revenue Plummet Across League
Lionel Messi's MLS suspension impacts Inter Miami's revenue and attendance, drawing criticism for affecting fans and financial outcomes.

The suspension of Lionel Messi by Major League Soccer (MLS) has sparked significant criticism due to the financial consequences faced by the league. MLS imposed a one-game suspension on Messi and his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba for missing the league’s All-Star Game, triggering backlash from fans and experts alike. The move has raised concerns about the negative effects on attendance and revenue.

Former goalkeeper and football analyst Shaka Hislop highlighted the real impact of the suspension. He emphasized the expected drop in attendance, especially from season ticket holders for Inter Miami’s home games. Liverpool legend Stevie Nicol also condemned the decision, saying,

“There’s always a circumstance where you have to make an exception. I think he’s 100 per cent wrong”

The Financial Surge Brought by Messi to Inter Miami and MLS

Since Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami, the club’s financial landscape has transformed dramatically. Inter Miami’s annual revenue grew from $50 million to $60 million in 2022 and is projected to reach $200 million by 2024. This remarkable increase stems from soaring ticket sales, global sponsorship deals, record-breaking jersey sales, and lucrative media rights.

Forbes now values Inter Miami at $1.2 billion, ranking it among the wealthiest soccer franchises in North America. The economic impact extends beyond Miami itself—MLS clubs have collectively earned over $83 million in additional revenue from away games played against Inter Miami with Messi on the field, averaging approximately $6.45 million per match.

Notably, hosting teams have also benefited significantly. Los Angeles FC made nearly $17.3 million from two games featuring Messi, while smaller-market clubs such as CF Montreal earned upwards of $8 million for a single match against Inter Miami when Messi competed.

Record-Breaking Attendances at MLS Venues Due to Messi’s Presence

Messi’s arrival has turned every MLS stadium into a destination for record-breaking crowds. For example, Chicago’s Soldier Field attracted 62,358 fans, predominantly wearing Argentina jerseys. In Columbus, attendance surged to 60,614—almost triple the usual figures. Vancouver saw 57,837 spectators flock to their stadium to watch Messi play, demonstrating the extraordinary draw he holds across the league.

The suspension of Messi now threatens to undo the attendance momentum and the substantial financial upswing MLS has enjoyed since his signing, creating uncertainty about the league’s short-term outlook.
