Matt Shaw Powers Cubs with Key Homer to Keep Pennant Race Hopes Alive

The Chicago Cubs remain tied for first place in the National League Central, thanks largely to the efforts of rookie Matt Shaw. In a pivotal game against their rivals, the Chicago White Sox, Shaw blasted a two-run home run that helped the Cubs secure a 6-1 victory on Saturday night.

Shaw connected on a 1-1 pitch in the top of the seventh inning with Nico Hoerner on first base, launching the ball 388 feet to left field to extend the Cubs’ lead to 3-0. Later, he drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning, increasing the team’s advantage to 6-0.

Strong Performance Highlights Shaw’s Rookie Season

Currently batting .226, Shaw has contributed six home runs and 13 runs batted in during his rookie year. Since the All-Star break, his form has improved considerably, going 10-for-20 and adding three home runs. At just 23 years old, Shaw has quickly become a valuable player for the Cubs.

Powering his way through the minor leagues before joining the Cubs, Shaw performed impressively across Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa in 2024. He posted a .284 average with 21 home runs, 19 doubles, four triples, 71 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases. His on-base plus slugging (OPS) in the minors was an impressive .867, reflecting his comprehensive offensive skills.

Shaw’s Awards and Collegiate Credentials

Shaw’s list of honors includes being named the Southern League Most Valuable Player, a Baseball America Double-A All-Star, and earning a spot on the Southern League Post-Season All-Star team. These accolades underline his outstanding minor league campaign before advancing to the majors.

Prior to his professional career, Shaw excelled at Maryland, where he was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and won the 2023 Brooks Wallace Award as the top collegiate shortstop. He was also a Consensus First-Team All-American and earned First Team All-Big Ten honors in both 2022 and 2023, along with a freshman All-American title in 2021.

Looking Ahead for the Cubs

As the 2024 season progresses, the Cubs aim to continue their strong performance by winning the weekend series against the White Sox on Sunday. Matt Shaw’s emerging role in the lineup offers hope for the team’s pennant race ambitions, signaling a promising future bolstered by his contributions.
