Patrick Mahomes Sr. travels to Arizona in court-approved trip to support son during Chiefs' preseason opener.

Patrick Mahomes Sr. has been granted court permission to leave Texas to attend the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals on August 9. This approval allows him to travel to Glendale, Arizona, supporting his son during the Chiefs’ first preseason matchup of the year at State Farm Stadium.

Mahomes Sr.’s request required judicial approval due to his probation stemming from a felony DWI conviction. The former Major League Baseball player pleaded guilty to a third or more DWI charge and must obtain court consent before traveling outside Texas. His travel request, submitted on July 17, was approved by a Smith County judge on July 22, permitting his trip from August 8 to August 10.

Background on Mahomes Sr.’s Legal Situation

The felony charge relates to a February arrest in Texas where police found Mahomes Sr. visibly intoxicated with an open can of Coors beer in his vehicle. This incident occurred days before his son led the Chiefs to victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. In court, Mahomes Sr. entered a guilty plea as part of a written agreement.

“Today [August 27, 2024], Mr. Mahomes entered a guilty plea in his case pursuant to a written plea agreement,” said Joseph D. Murphy, Mahomes Sr.’s attorney. “Our client is now living a sober life.”
“And we believe that the steps he has taken to better his life have helped us negotiate a plea recommendation for probation.”

Kansas City Chiefs Aim for Strong Season After February Setback

While Mahomes Sr. prepares to support his son in person, the Chiefs are focusing on bouncing back from their disappointing championship loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9. The team retains a strong lineup led by players such as Travis Kelce, Nick Bolton, and Trey Smith, who are expected to contribute significantly to a potential Super Bowl run.

Speculation Surrounds Possible Tyreek Hill Return

One storyline gaining particular attention is the possible return of wide receiver Tyreek Hill to Kansas City, where he was a key figure in earlier Super Bowl campaigns. Hill currently plays for the Miami Dolphins and has posted impressive statistics there, but recent reports suggest he may be dissatisfied with the team.

Sports analyst Nick Wright has expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of Hill rejoining the Chiefs, predicting a reunion with Patrick Mahomes in 2026. Wright also highlighted the potential pairing of Hill and Travis Kelce as a strong duo to close out their time together in Kansas City.

“I’m very excited for Hill wearing a Chiefs uniform in 2026,” Wright stated to Fox Sports. “[Hill] and [Travis] Kelce ride off into the sunset together, because that’s, I think, going to happen.”

Upcoming Games Mark NFL Expansion into New Regions

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to open their regular season on September 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Notably, this matchup will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, reflecting the NFL’s ongoing efforts to expand its international presence.
