Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins came off the non-football injury (NFI) list on Monday as he prepares to return to the field amid ongoing contract negotiations. Jenkins, currently involved in an Elgton Jenkins Packers contract dispute, will begin his recovery with limited participation in individual drills, according to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
Contract Situation and Position Adjustment
Jenkins was placed on the NFI list before training camp because of disagreements over his contract terms. While he has two years left on a four-year, $68 million deal signed in 2022, none of the money is guaranteed, and Jenkins is pushing for a revised contract that better matches the market value for his new role at center. The move to center comes as he replaces Josh Myers for the upcoming season, shifting from his previous left guard position.
Financial Implications and Team Strategy
Jenkins’ current average salary is $17 million per year, placing him among the highest-paid centers in the NFL, tied with Eagles’ Cam Jurgens and trailing Chiefs All-Pro Creed Humphrey, who earns $18 million annually. General manager Brian Gutekunst expressed confidence in the mutual respect between Jenkins and the organization, stating,
“Elgton’s always done right by us, I think we’ve always done right by him,”
during a recent media session.
Team Additions and Draft Prospects Preparing for Lineup Changes
Turning 30 in December, Jenkins is transitioning inside to make room for the newly acquired free agent Aaron Banks at left guard. The Packers have also bolstered their offensive line through the 2025 draft, selecting Anthony Belton with the 54th overall pick and John Williams in the seventh round. Jenkins, originally a second-round pick in 2019, has been a consistent starter, appearing in 87 games with 85 starts and earning two Pro Bowl selections during his career.
Looking Ahead: Impact on Packers’ Offensive Line
Jenkins’ return and positional shift come at a pivotal moment for the Packers as they reshape their offensive line for the season ahead. His presence at center is expected to provide stability, while newly added players and draftees aim to strengthen the unit overall. The resolution of his contract dispute and successful integration into the new role could be critical for Green Bay’s offensive effectiveness moving forward.
