Aaron Judge Injury Update: Yankees Star to Resume Hitting Soon, Could Return After Shortest IL Stint

New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge is expected to begin hitting off a tee within the next few days following his placement on the injured list due to a strained flexor muscle, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed. This development comes after Judge was sidelined last Saturday, marking the start of what could be one of the shortest stints on the injured list by the star player.

Timeline for Judge’s Return and Playing Capacity

Boone indicated that Judge would not resume throwing for 10 to 15 days, signaling that his initial return to action will be as a designated hitter. It remains uncertain when Judge will be ready to return to the outfield, as throwing could put stress on the injured ligament. Boone said,

“I think he’s going to start hitting off the tee and some toss today or tomorrow,”

during his appearance on the Talkin’ Yankees podcast.

Regarding Judge’s workload upon his return, Boone previously stated,

“There’s the feeling that if he just DH’d now, that he probably would not compromise his UCL,”

before adding,

“Obviously, throwing would. That said, there is a gripping component to it and it’s probably, obviously, not like the defensive side, but probably somewhat affecting him offensively, too.”

Restrictions on Position Played After Recovery

The Yankees have ruled out shifting Judge to first base when he returns, unlike the Philadelphia Phillies’ approach with Bryce Harper, who played at first following an arm injury. The team appears focused on managing Judge’s workload carefully to avoid further complications, particularly with the ligament involved.

Judge’s Impact Before Injury and Team Response

Before his injury, Judge delivered a remarkable performance in 103 games, posting a .342 batting average, .449 on-base percentage, and a .771 slugging percentage, along with 37 home runs. He led the major leagues in OPS, OPS+, WAR, total bases, and hits at the time of his injury. Despite this, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has overtaken Judge as the favorite for the American League MVP, holding a slight edge in odds according to FanDuel Sportsbook, with Judge currently listed second-best.

In response to Judge’s absence, the Yankees have acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon and utility infielder Amed Rosario to strengthen their lineup. As of Tuesday, the Yankees were 57-49 and trailing by 5½ games in the American League East.

With the trade deadline approaching on July 31 at 6 p.m. ET, it is unclear if the Yankees will make further moves to bolster their roster in pursuit of a playoff push.
