Coco Gauff Leads WTA Tour with Most Double Faults in 2025—Can She Fix Her Serve Woes?

Coco Gauff narrowly won her second-round match at the Canadian Open on Monday, edging out fellow American Danielle Collins 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 [7-2] in a tense three-set battle. However, Gauff’s serving difficulties stood out as she committed 23 double faults, making only 53% of her first serves in one of her weakest performances of the season.

This ongoing challenge with her serve raises concerns for the 21-year-old, currently ranked world number two, as she tries to climb to the top spot on the WTA Tour.

Players Leading 2025 in Most Double Faults

Coco Gauff tops the list for double faults on the WTA Tour this year, a troubling statistic for a player of her caliber. She is the only player to have hit more than 200 double faults, totaling 250 so far in 2025. Gauff’s serving issues are not isolated: she has recorded over 20 double faults in multiple matches, including 23 errors in her Canadian Open match against Collins and 21 against Moyuka Uchijima in Miami earlier this year.

While Gauff has proven she can win Grand Slam titles despite these problems, it is apparent that improving her serve will be crucial if she wants to reach world number one.

Other Players Notably Struggling With Their Serves

Following Gauff, Czech rising star Linda Noskova ranks second in double faults with 193 recorded in 2025. The 20-year-old showed her vulnerability by hitting six double faults in the Prague Open final, where she lost to Marie Bouzkova in three sets. Noskova also made five double faults in her first-round loss to Jaqueline Cristian at the Canadian Open and will aim to bounce back at the Cincinnati Open, where she exited in the first round last year.

American Amanda Anisimova, ranked third with 190 double faults, is still seeking a strong return to form after her lopsided loss to Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon final, where she committed five double faults. She plans to continue her comeback at the Canadian Open against New Zealand’s Lulu Sun.

Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska has faced similar difficulties, with 184 double faults to her name, the same number as Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko. Yastremska, despite having five top-ten wins, has lost her last four WTA finals where her double faults contributed significantly to her defeats. For instance, in the 2025 Linz Open final, she made eight double faults compared to her opponent Ekaterina Alexandrova’s three. Her recent win over Camila Osorio at the Canadian Open included six double faults, showing the ongoing challenges she faces.

Jelena Ostapenko, known for her unpredictable play, struggles with consistency that mirrors her 184 double faults tally. Her fluctuating level suggests that reducing these errors could help her maintain better form and perhaps chase a second Grand Slam title.

Comparison to Double Fault Leaders in 2024

The list of top double fault offenders remains relatively unchanged from 2024, with Coco Gauff once again leading the pack by a wide margin. She finished last season well ahead of second-placed Marta Kostyuk by 60 double faults. This persistent issue highlights a significant obstacle for Gauff’s career advancement moving forward.

Experts and fans alike will be watching closely to see if Gauff can adapt her serve and reduce these costly mistakes, given her demonstrated ability to win major titles despite these setbacks.
