As August approaches and the Washington Capitals prepare for their upcoming training camp, two key players have returned to the ice for initial informal sessions. Logan Thompson and Matt Roy, notable offseason signings last year, were the first to participate in early drills at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.
According to Monumental Sports Network’s Tarik El-Bashir, the pair wore Capitals practice jerseys while taking part in exercises led by goaltending coach Scott Murray.

Profiles of Thompson and Roy as They Prepare for Another Season
Logan Thompson, 28, is gearing up for his sophomore campaign with the Capitals following a breakout season as the team’s starting goaltender. The Calgary-born netminder earned strong recognition, finishing fourth in the 2025 Vezina Trophy race. Thompson’s performance featured a 31-6-6 record, a 2.49 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and two shutouts.
After securing a six-year, $35.1 million contract extension in January, Thompson has kept close ties with the Washington area this offseason. His offseason activities have included serving as a guest coach alongside Braden Holtby during the team’s development camp, and participating in a recent autograph event with teammates John Carlson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Al Iafrate in Southern Maryland.
Meanwhile, Matt Roy, 30, played 69 games during his first season with the Capitals after signing a six-year, $34.5 million deal the previous summer. The veteran defenseman tallied 24 points—including three goals and 21 assists—and was trusted with significant ice time, ranking third on the team with an average of 19:53 per game.
Additional Players Join Early Training Sessions
The informal skating sessions also included Sam Anas, a winger originally from Potomac, Maryland, who is currently with Dynamo Minsk in the KHL but has returned home for the offseason. Ottawa Senators forward Hayden Hodgson was present as well, likely in the area due to his relationship with Capitals assistant coach Kirk Muller’s daughter, Kira Muller.
Looking Ahead to the Capitals’ Training Camp Schedule
The Capitals have yet to announce the official dates for their 2025 Training Camp, although last year’s camp began on September 19. The early informal workouts involving Thompson, Roy, and others provide an initial glimpse at the team’s preparation as they build toward the new <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/hockey/nhl/”>NHL season.
