Dylan Crews Begins Nationals Injury Rehab with Short Stint at Rochester, Shows Promising Signs

Washington Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews resumed his injury rehab on Tuesday night at Triple-A Rochester, appearing in a brief four-inning stint. This marks his first competitive action since May 20, as he stepped in as the second batter and played right field for the Rochester Red Wings during the game.

Details of Crews’ Limited Playtime and Progress

The usual rehab game for outfielders often lasts for three at-bats or seven innings, but Crews’ outing was shorter than typical, ending after four innings. In his second at-bat, occurring in the third inning, Crews was struck by a pitch but remained in the game, participating defensively through the third and fourth innings. He was removed for pinch-hitter Andrew Pinckney thereafter. His ability to continue after being hit by the pitch offers encouraging signs for his ongoing recovery.

Crews’ first at-bat saw him grounding out in the opening inning. His limited playtime may have been part of a prearranged plan to ease him back into game action.

Background on Crews’ Injury and Season Impact

Crews was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 21 due to a left oblique strain, with hopes for a quicker recovery than the two months it eventually took. On July 22, he was moved to the 60-day injured list as a procedural move to clear space on the Nationals’ 40-man roster.

Before the injury, Crews was projected to be among the top candidates for National League Rookie of the Year, but his stats in 45 games this season fell short of those expectations. He hit .196/.266/.354 with two doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 15 RBIs during that span.

Crews’ Career and Potential Future Role with Nationals

Selected third overall in the 2023 draft by the Nationals, Crews quickly became a key prospect after helping LSU win the Men’s College World Series alongside Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes. He reached the major leagues after just 135 minor league games last season.

In 100 minor-league games in 2024, Crews posted solid numbers with a .270/.342/.451 slash line, 13 home runs, and 68 RBIs. In 31 Major League games last year, he slashed .218/.288/.353, adding three home runs and eight RBIs.

The Nationals continue to view Crews as an essential part of their rebuilding efforts, along with promising talents like outfielder James Wood, who recently made his first All-Star appearance, and shortstop C.J. Abrams.

Looking Ahead for Dylan Crews’ Return

Crews’ initial injury rehab games signal progress after a challenging season marred by injury and underperformance. Maintaining health and regaining his early promise could have a significant impact on the Nationals’ outfield depth and overall future competition. His progress in Rochester will be closely monitored as he works to return to full strength and reestablish himself on the Nationals’ roster.
