Luka Doncic's trade to Lakers shook Mavericks fans, underscored team connection, but optimism for future remains.
The February blockbuster trade sending Slovenian star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers deeply affected both the player and the Dallas Mavericks fanbase. Rick Welts, the Dallas Mavericks’ CEO, recently reflected on the transaction, highlighting the mixed emotions involved while emphasizing the stronger bond that emerged between the team and its supporters.
Welts explained the mindset required after such a significant roster change, stating,
“You can’t have fear or regrets in this business, it’s all about how you move forward,”
in an interview with Bloomberg TV. His focus remained on progress despite the challenges the trade brought.
Strengthening the Relationship Between Mavericks and Their Fans
In reacting to fan disappointment, Welts shared insights about the depth of connection between the Dallas community and the Mavericks organization. He said,
“I learned about the depth of the connection between Mavericks fans and this team,”
referring to loyal fans’ passionate responses. He viewed this as a hopeful sign, adding,
“And that to me was a glass half-full because I knew we could restore that over time. I didn’t think it would quite as quickly as it’s perhaps as it’s happened.”
Details of the Trade and Its Immediate Aftermath
The trade sent Doncic along with German forward Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers. In return, the Mavericks acquired Anthony Davis, young prospect Max Christie, and a future first-round draft pick. The Utah Jazz were also part of the deal, receiving Jalen Hood-Schifino and a future second-round pick.
This rearrangement marked a major shift for Dallas, with key players departing but also receiving promising assets for the team’s rebuilding efforts.
Honoring Luka Doncic’s Return to Dallas
Welts took pride in how the Mavericks organization handled Luka Doncic’s first visit back to the American Airlines Center as a member of the Lakers in the 2024-25 NBAseason. He said,

“I would also say I’m incredibly proud of how the organization presented itself for Luka’s first game back at American Airlines Center when he was a Los Angeles Laker,”
emphasizing the respectful atmosphere. Speaking on the emotional night, he added,
“If you watch that game, it was an opportunity for fans to say ‘thank you.’ I think you saw the emotion on Luka’s face, you saw the way that night unfolded in tributes to Luka. I think he’ll always be such a big part of the history here. We wish him nothing but good luck, and we also hope we beat his team every time we play them.”
Looking Ahead: Doncic’s Upcoming Season and International Play
Before embarking on his eighth NBA season and first full campaign with the Lakers, Luka Doncic is scheduled to represent Slovenia at EuroBasket 2025. The tournament will take place from August 27 to September 14, with Slovenia competing in the preliminary round held in Katowice. This international duty adds to the anticipation surrounding Doncic’s ongoing basketball journey.
