Max Verstappen Ends Speculation, Confirms He’s Staying at Red Bull for 2026 Season
Max Verstappen confirms commitment to Red Bull, ending speculation about a potential move to Mercedes for 2025.

Max Verstappen has decisively ended one of Formula 1’s most talked-about stories by confirming he will remain with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season. The Dutch driver made the announcement during the Hungarian Grand Prix, putting to rest weeks of speculation linking him to a potential move to Mercedes.

Throughout the 2025 season, numerous reports and comments from Mercedes driver George Russell and team principal Toto Wolff suggested ongoing discussions with Verstappen. However, the four-time world champion clarified that those conversations have concluded, and he is focused solely on Red Bull’s future performance.

Verstappen Clarifies His Commitment to Red Bull

Addressing the media at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen acknowledged the swirling rumors but stressed that he never personally engaged in talk of a team switch. He stated,

“There were a lot of nice stories and things like that,”

before adding,

“That’s why I never had anything to add to it. But yes, I think it’s time to put all the rumors to rest.”

The 27-year-old emphasized that his focus remained on collaborating with Red Bull to enhance their car’s performance for the upcoming season. He explained,

“It’s always been pretty clear to me that I was going to stay,”

noting that the team shared the same outlook as discussions consistently revolved around development plans.

Verstappen elaborated,

“I think when you’re not interested in staying, you also stop talking about these kinds of things. And I never did.”

His firm stance shattered the doubts regarding his 2026 plans.

Context Behind Verstappen’s Decision to Speak Out

Verstappen’s public confirmation was unexpected, as he had previously avoided direct answers regarding his future. Notably, during the Silverstone Grand Prix in early July, speculation escalated when Sky Italia reported that Verstappen had given a ‘yes’ to Toto Wolff about joining Mercedes. Yet, Verstappen remained silent, stating he had “Nothing to add.”

This shift in openness closely followed significant changes within Red Bull. Christian Horner, the team principal and CEO, departed shortly before Verstappen’s announcement. Horner had been embroiled in controversy since the start of the 2024 season amid allegations of inappropriate behavior from a female employee. Though cleared twice in internal investigations, the situation stirred unrest.

Internal Turmoil at Red Bull Affecting Team Dynamics

Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, publicly criticized Horner during the controversy, implying internal tension was threatening the team. He warned,

“There is tension here while he remains in position,”

adding,

“It can’t go on the way it is. It will explode. He is playing the victim, when he is the one causing the problems.”

Despite weathering the storm, Horner’s leadership era experienced further upheaval as key figures like renowned engineer Adrian Newey and team principal Jonathan Wheatley exited. Their departures coincided with a noticeable slump in Red Bull’s performance that has persisted through the 2025 season, intensifying the pressure on the team.

Public Fallout Between Verstappens and Red Bull Leadership

The media often framed the Verstappen family at odds with Horner, a dynamic that surfaced in an awkward interview with former world champion Nico Rosberg and Jos Verstappen in Belgium. When Rosberg reminded Jos of his previous call for Horner’s removal, Jos responded guardedly, saying,

“That was one-and-a-half years ago, it’s different, I have nothing to say, it’s fine.”

During the exchange, Rosberg pressed Jos for further comment, “Now you’re quiet…” to which Jos shot an irritated gaze, replying, “I’m always quiet,” highlighting the unresolved tensions beneath the surface.

What Verstappen’s Confirmation Means for Formula 1 and Red Bull

Max Verstappen’s decision to stay with Red Bull settles months of intense speculation that threatened to disrupt the Formula 1 landscape ahead of the 2026 season. His choice solidifies Red Bull’s driver lineup, allowing the team to focus on regaining momentum amid internal challenges and recent performance dips.

For Mercedes, meanwhile, the closure on Verstappen’s Red Bull decision is a setback in their efforts to lure the reigning world champion. It leaves them to continue building around George Russell and Lewis Hamilton as they seek to challenge Red Bull’s dominance.

Red Bull’s path forward will now hinge on how effectively they can recover from recent departures and discord, uniting behind Verstappen to maximize their car’s competitiveness. The impending introduction of new regulations and car designs also intensifies the stakes for both the drivers and teams as they prepare for the new era in Formula 1.
