Panthers Exec Compares Bryce Young to Patrick Mahomes Ahead of Crucial QB Extension Talks
Bryce Young's future with the Panthers could echo Patrick Mahomes' extension success, but patience is key.

The Carolina Panthers aim to build a successful future around quarterback Bryce Young, yet they recognize that he has not yet reached the elite status of Patrick Mahomes. While every NFL franchise would desire Mahomes on their roster, the Panthers are assessing Young’s development as they approach critical extension discussions. Young, currently on a rookie contract, has yet to secure a long-term deal like Mahomes, whose multiple MVP awards earned him a record-setting contract early in his career.

Executive Insights on Timing and Expectations for Bryce Young’s Extension

Brandt Tilis, who previously worked with the Kansas City Chiefs when Mahomes’ unique contract was negotiated, now serves in the Panthers’ front office and shared his perspective on Young’s extension timeline. Tilis notes that Mahomes’ extension was expedited due to his rapid ascent and the team’s clear championship trajectory following his second NFL season.

“I’ve only done it with Pat Mahomes in Kansas City,” Tilis said via Joe Person of The Athletic.

He added that Mahomes’ swift rise to appearing in the AFC Championship Game made the decision more straightforward. By contrast, Young is still progressing in his third year and has not yet demonstrated the same level of impact.

According to Tilis, the Panthers have flexibility because Young remains under rookie contract control through at least next season, with the team holding a fifth-year option. This structure allows them more time to evaluate his performance before committing to an extension.

“Bryce is an ascending player,” the executive commented.

“So I don’t want to sit here and make any kind of promises, any kind of statements about what we’re thinking about for Bryce’s contract or anything like that.”

Tilis also emphasized that Young likely prioritizes his on-field growth over contract negotiations for now, trusting that discussions about extensions will naturally develop later without distraction.

Assessing Bryce Young’s Role and Future with the Panthers

Young’s ability to rejuvenate his career has been promising, yet the Panthers remain cautious about making immediate financial commitments. His current contract status and the potential for free agency after the fifth year give Carolina leverage in managing risks related to his development and performance.

Looking ahead, how the Panthers balance their desire to retain Young against prudent contract timing will affect both the team’s competitive prospects and Young’s future role as their franchise quarterback.

This period signals a defining moment for Carolina’s leadership, as they navigate managing a rising star’s potential while avoiding early overextensions that could impact the team’s salary cap flexibility.
