Ricky Stenhouse Jr’s racing career began long before he entered the NASCAR Cup Series, rooted in a childhood surrounded by motorsport. Born into a racing family, his introduction to the racetrack came practically from infancy, influenced by his father’s dirt racing background. This early exposure laid the foundation for a passion that started on BMX bikes and go-karts before advancing to full-size dirt cars at venues like Memphis Motorsports Park.
Breakthrough in USAC National Sprint Car Competition
Stenhouse rose to prominence in 2007 during his time at Manzanita Speedway, where he captured two victories out of three starts in the Copper on Dirt event. His dominance in both the USAC National Sprint Car and Silver Crown series showcased his natural driving ability and put him on the radar of influential figures in racing. This success led to a pivotal opportunity when Tony Stewart Racing needed a replacement driver due to Tracey Hines’s injury.
Transition to NASCAR and Early Achievements
Seizing the moment, Stenhouse joined Tony Stewart’s midget and sprint car stable, accelerating his ascent into NASCAR’s ranks. Just two races into driving for Tony Stewart Racing, he secured a win in the USAC National Midget Car Series at Tri-State Speedway in Indiana. His confidence soared as he realized the chance to compete at higher levels was becoming a reality.
Progression to the NASCAR Cup Series
Now marking his 13th full season in NASCAR’s premier division, Stenhouse has claimed four victories from 458 starts, with the pinnacle being his triumph at the 2023 Daytona 500. Although the competitive atmosphere of Cup racing has presented challenges, his earlier successes in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series remain impressive. Stenhouse earned consecutive championships in 2011 and 2012, amassing eight wins, 40 top-five finishes, and 63 top-10s in 110 starts within the series.
Reflecting on a Lifelong Dream
Looking back on his path from dirt tracks to the NASCAR spotlight, Stenhouse recalls the straightforward love for racing that motivated him from the start.
“That’s how I got my start, just racing dirt tracks… So, just started figuring out my skills in dirt track racing, and that’s what I knew growing up, and that’s all I really wanted to do. Then things just evolved where it ended up. I got a shot to race stock cars and get to the NASCAR Cup Series and that’s been a dream come true,”
he shared.
