With only hours remaining before the MLB trade deadline, the San Diego Padres are still in search of a left fielder to strengthen their lineup. The team has shown particular interest in acquiring Cleveland Guardians’ Steven Kwan, a two-time American League All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner known for his strong batting and defensive skills.
Cleveland’s Demands Include Padres’ Top Prospect
The Guardians have made clear what they expect in exchange for Kwan. According to journalist Dennis Lin of The Athletic, Cleveland’s asking price includes San Diego’s top overall prospect Leo De Vries along with additional players. Kwan currently ranks 12th in the AL with a .286 batting average and 20th with a .350 on-base percentage, making him a valuable asset for the Padres.
Padres Unable to Offer Leo De Vries After Recent Trade
However, the Padres are unable to meet the Guardians’ demands for De Vries since he was part of a recent trade. On Thursday morning, San Diego sent De Vries as well as pitching prospects Braden Nett, Henry Baez, and Eduarniel Núñez to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for All-Star closer Mason Miller and left-handed starter JP Sears. This deal removes De Vries from the Padres’ available assets to negotiate with Cleveland.
San Diego Proposes Other High-Value Offers for Left Fielders
Despite losing De Vries as a trade option, the Padres remain active and willing to negotiate with other teams. They demonstrated this by offering starting pitcher Dylan Cease, the No. 2 overall prospect Ethan Salas, and another unnamed prospect to the Boston Red Sox for All-Star left fielder Jarren Duran. While that deal was declined, it highlights San Diego’s readiness to part with significant talent in pursuit of a quality left fielder.
Guardians’ Trade Options Narrow After Bieber Deal
The Padres had also hoped to secure a package involving Shane Bieber, Cleveland’s two-time All-Star starter and 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner. However, Bieber was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays earlier in the week, limiting San Diego’s possible trade partners and forcing the team to reconsider its approach.
Efforts Continue as Trade Deadline Approaches
With the trade cutoff fast approaching, the Padres must explore additional options to reinforce their outfield. General manager AJ Preller is actively working on potential deals following their recent trade with the Athletics, seeking players who can provide strong offensive output and defensive reliability. San Diego’s willingness to offer top prospects and established MLB talent underlines their commitment to improve the roster before the deadline.
