Terry McLaurin Requests Trade Amid Stalled Commanders Contract Talks Ahead of 2025 Season
Terry McLaurin's contract talks with the Commanders stall, prompting trade request despite team's refusal to part ways.

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, Terry McLaurin’s contract discussions with the Washington Commanders remain at an impasse, prompting the star wide receiver to request a trade. Despite this move, the Commanders are firm on keeping McLaurin, aiming to retain their key offensive weapon as they pursue Super Bowl aspirations.

Washington Commanders Maintain Firm Stance on McLaurin’s Future

Multiple reports from credible sources like ESPN’s Adam Schefter and The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reveal that the Commanders have consistently denied trade inquiries made by several teams interested in McLaurin. Russini noted,

“Over the last few months, multiple teams have reached out to the Commanders to inquire about trading for McLaurin. Each time, they were told no.”

This underlines the organization’s reluctance to part ways with one of their most valuable players.

McLaurin’s Role and Status Entering the New Season

McLaurin is heading into the final year of his current contract and has expressed a desire for a long-term extension. While he reported to training camp on Sunday, he has yet to participate fully in practices due to starting the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list because of an ankle injury. Head coach Dan Quinn provided some clarity during a press conference:

“McLaurin has reported and we’re very happy about that,”

and added,

“He’ll start training camp on PUP for his ankle. On the business side, [Commanders general manager Adam Peters] and the guys are still working very hard with Terry and his rep on the business side of things. While on PUP—just like we do with the other guys—he’ll be working with the trainers to get back as soon as he can.”

McLaurin’s Performance and Market Comparisons Fuel Contract Talks

The wide receiver continues to be a vital target for quarterback Jayden Daniels, having secured his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season in 2024 with 82 receptions, 1,096 yards, and a career-high 13 touchdowns. Meanwhile, other elite receivers such as D.K. Metcalf, Garrett Wilson, and Tee Higgins have locked in lucrative extensions this offseason, commanding deals in the $115 million to $132 million range over four years. Although McLaurin is slightly older, his consistent elite production positions him as a strong candidate for comparable compensation.

Outlook for Resolution and Potential Contract Extension

While McLaurin’s trade request casts a shadow over current talks, the Commanders’ unwillingness to entertain offers coupled with ongoing negotiations suggests that a resolution may eventually be reached. The sticking points appear to revolve around the contract’s length and average annual value, but both sides seem motivated to find common ground. Given McLaurin’s critical role in Washington’s offense and the team’s playoff ambitions, an extension remains the most probable outcome ahead of the 2025 season.
