The New York Mets have made a roster move to accommodate the arrival of outfielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles. Ahead of their series opener against the San Francisco Giants, the Mets optioned infielder Luisangel Acuña to Triple-A Syracuse, creating space on the major league roster for Mullins after his trade Thursday evening.
Additional Roster Changes and Injury Updates
Alongside Acuña’s demotion, left-handed reliever Jose Castillo was sent outright to Triple-A after being designated for assignment last week. Meanwhile, lefty reliever Brandon Waddell, who has been on the 15-day injured list due to a hip injury, will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow with Double-A Binghamton as he works toward recovery.
Young Infielders’ Roles Amid Trade Deadline Decisions
During the trade deadline period, it was anticipated that the Mets might trade one of their young infielders to bolster their bullpen and add offensive depth. However, New York opted to retain its core infield group, instead sending Acuña back to the minors to better manage playing time and roster balance.
Luisangel Acuña’s Performance and Playing Time
Acuña, who started the season on the Mets’ Opening Day roster due to Jeff McNeil’s injury, began strongly, batting .288 with a .342 on-base percentage and three RBIs in April. He also contributed 13 runs scored and seven stolen bases, earning National League Rookie of the Month honors. However, his playing time diminished in recent months as performance struggles surfaced.
In May, Acuña’s batting average dropped to .204, and in June it fell further to .167, which led to his demotion to Triple-A Syracuse on June 23. Although he returned to the major league roster on July 10, Acuña has mainly been utilized as a pinch runner or for defensive purposes, with Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio emerging as more productive options at the plate.
Impact of the Roster Move and Future Playing Time Distribution
The decision to option Acuña appears linked to the crowded Mets infield and the addition of Mullins to their lineup. Jeff McNeil is expected to take on most of the second base duties, while Baty and Mauricio will split time at third base. Additionally, Mark Vientos will likely share designated hitter responsibilities with Starling Marte, creating fewer opportunities for Acuña to secure regular playing time.
