The Toronto Blue Jays officially placed outfielder George Springer on the 7-day concussion list on Friday, following his head injury sustained earlier this week. This roster move, which is retroactive to Tuesday, was announced ahead of the team’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
Springer was struck in the head by a pitch from Baltimore Orioles right-hander Kade Strowd during Monday’s game, and he was down on the field for over a minute. Despite the severity of the incident, Springer remained conscious and was eventually assisted off the field without immediate hospitalization.
Player Performance and Team Roster Adjustments
At 35 years old, Springer has been having a strong season, posting a .291 batting average with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs across 101 games, marking his best offensive performance since 2021. Alongside Springer’s injury update, the Blue Jays activated center fielder Daulton Varsho from the 10-day injured list after recovering from a hamstring injury that sidelined him since the end of May.
Varsho, 29, has struggled offensively this season, hitting .207 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games. In other roster moves, the Blue Jays optioned right-handed pitcher Paxton Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo. Schultz, 27, has recorded a 4.56 ERA in 12 appearances, including two starts, this year with Toronto.
Implications for Team Depth and Upcoming Matches
The placement of Springer on the concussion list creates some uncertainty around his availability in the coming week. The Blue Jays will rely on their roster depth, including the recent activation of Varsho, to maintain competitive play while Springer recovers. How long Springer will remain sidelined remains dependent on medical evaluations during his concussion protocol.
