As the MLB trade deadline passed, the New York Mets made several significant moves to enhance their roster, but they ultimately missed out on acquiring veteran starting pitcher Merrill Kelly. While the Mets focused on shoring up their bullpen and outfield, Kelly was traded to the Texas Rangers in a deal involving pitching prospects.
Key Acquisitions Bolster Mets’ Bullpen and Outfield
Leading up to the deadline, the Mets traded for center fielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles, giving up three relief pitching prospects, only one of whom ranked among the team’s top 30. This move addressed a pressing outfield need. On the pitching side, the Mets added Gregory Soto, Tyler Rogers, and Ryan Helsley—three talented bullpen arms with contracts nearing expiration. Combined with closer Edwin Diaz, the Mets’ bullpen is regarded as one of the strongest in the National League. The Mets’ rivals in New York, the Yankees, also enhanced their bullpen by acquiring David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camilo Doval.
Rangers Acquire Merrill Kelly in Prospect-Fueled Swap
Despite their efforts, the Mets could not secure a veteran starter to solidify their rotation. The team was reportedly interested in Merrill Kelly of the Arizona Diamondbacks, a right-hander who many expected to finish his career in Arizona. However, the Rangers outmaneuvered the Mets and finalized a deal, sending three promising pitching prospects to Arizona: left-handers Drake Kohl and Mitch Bratt, alongside right-hander David Hagaman.
Next Steps for the Mets Ahead of the Season’s Second Half
The Mets now face the challenge of maximizing their strengthened bullpen while continuing to rely on their current starting rotation. Missing out on a veteran like Kelly leaves a gap in starting pitching that remains a concern. However, the organization‘s aggressive moves in other areas demonstrate a clear determination to improve and remain competitive throughout the season.
