Australia’s Adam Scott is seeing his chances to advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs slipping away during the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina, with American Cameron Young leading the tournament at 14 under par. Scott, currently four under overall and ten shots behind Young, has four holes left to play in the second round amid weather delays.
The second round was suspended because of dangerous weather conditions while Scott and other afternoon players were still on the course. At 45 years old, Scott must finish at least tied for third to secure a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs, but he remains just one shot above the projected cut line at this stage.
Scott’s Mixed Performance Puts Playoff Prospects at Risk
The 2013 Masters champion began the tournament strongly with an opening round 65, aiming to avoid missing the playoffs for the second time in three years after a streak of 16 consecutive postseason appearances. However, Scott’s position has dropped 33 places on the leaderboard after recording one over par through 14 holes in his second round.
During this round, Scott made three birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey but will still have an opportunity to recover some ground on the par-5 15th hole once play resumes. He managed to drive successfully down the fairway before the suspension of play.

Gary Woodland Captivates Audience with Rare Albatross on Fifth Hole
The day’s standout moment came from 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland, who recorded a rare albatross—a score of two—on the par-5 fifth hole. Woodland hit a seven-iron from 186 yards following a long 337-yard drive, marking the second albatross in his golfing career; his first was also with a seven-iron back in high school.
“The key is obviously get it in the fairway and give yourself a chance,” Woodland said.
He described the shot in detail:
“I hit a nice drive, had 186 hole, we were trying to land it 183 and the wind was a little in so we thought it was a perfect 7-iron and it came off right where we were looking, landed 183, landed three short.”
“Nice to see the crowd go nuts to make sure it went in. It was a good shot, but it was a lot of luck and one that I’ll remember, for sure.”
Woodland added the challenge of judging the shot’s success:
“I mean, from that far away you’re just, I’m hoping the crowd goes nuts first and then I’ll know the ball disappeared.”
“You can’t tell if it went behind the pin or not. Somebody yelled go in” when the ball landed, he explained.
“So that was a nice bonus for sure.”
Current Standings and Notable Performances amid Tight Competition
At the top of the leaderboard, Cameron Young is approaching the completion of his second round, currently leading at 14 under par with three holes remaining. His seven-under performance today puts him one shot clear of England’s Aaron Rai, who has five holes left to play.
In the clubhouse, Mac Meissner and Sungjae Im are tied at 12 under par, with Meissner recording the day’s lowest round of 63. Fellow American Cameron Rodgers also shot 63 and sits at seven under par.
Among notable players struggling to make the cut, Max Homa and Tom Kim are currently positioned to miss advancing to the playoffs, with Homa at one under and Kim at two over, both with five holes to go.
Australian Players’ Mixed Results and Playoff Hopes Ahead
Among the Australians, rookie Karl Vilips is the best placed at six under par after a second consecutive round of 67. Vilips needs a solo fourth-place finish or better to break into the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings. Aaron Baddeley has also made the cut and sits at three under after scoring 67 in his second round.
Cam Davis is currently on the projected cut line at three under par but has seven holes remaining when play resumes.
Significance of the Wyndham Championship on FedEx Cup Playoff Outcomes
The Wyndham Championship serves as the final tournament of the PGA Tour’s regular season, making it critical for players like Adam Scott and Karl Vilips who are fighting to secure spots in the FedEx Cup playoffs. With the leaderboard tightly packed and weather interruptions affecting play, the closing holes will be crucial in determining who advances to the postseason.
Cameron Young’s current lead and Gary Woodland’s remarkable albatross have added drama to the event, illustrating how each shot can influence playoff standings. As action continues once conditions improve, the remaining rounds will reveal which players can capitalize on their opportunities and who will fall short in this pivotal stage of the PGA Tour season.
