The Chicago White Sox reinstated right-handed pitcher Shane Smith from the 15-day injured list on Friday, just before their series opener against the Los Angeles Angels. Smith’s return to the rotation comes after a left ankle sprain sidelined him since mid-July.
Roster Moves Include Outfielder Corey Julks Joining the Team
Alongside Smith’s activation, the White Sox added outfielder Corey Julks from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned outfielder Will Robertson back to Triple-A. Julks, 29, has impressed this season, hitting .295 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs in 87 games for Charlotte. He previously played 66 games with Chicago in 2022, recording a .214 average with three homers and 14 RBIs.
Smith’s Performance Before Injury and Return Expectations
Before his injury, Smith held a 3-7 record with a 4.26 ERA and 81 strikeouts over 18 starts. Early in the season, he was exceptional, posting a 2.37 ERA through his first 13 outings, which earned him a selection to the American League All-Star team—the first rookie pitcher from Chicago to receive the honor. With his quick recovery, Smith is expected to resume his role as a starter immediately upon return.
Will Robertson’s Limited Impact This Season
Will Robertson, 27, had a brief stint with the White Sox, appearing in four games and going 0-for-6 with four strikeouts. Since being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 10 for cash considerations, Robertson has yet to find his footing, batting 1-for-16 including previous appearances with Toronto. His option back to Triple-A reflects the team’s current roster strategy.
Looking Ahead: Smith’s Return Bolsters White Sox Pitching Staff
The return of Shane Smith strengthens Chicago’s starting rotation as the team heads into a critical series. His early-season success and All-Star recognition highlight his potential to contribute significantly down the stretch. Meanwhile, roster changes involving Julks and Robertson indicate the team’s efforts to fine-tune its lineup for the remainder of the season.
