At just 22 years old, Brian Thomas Jr. has already established himself as a guiding presence within the Jacksonville Jaguars organization, showing a maturity beyond his years during his second NFL season. As the former top draft pick for the Jaguars, Thomas has transitioned from being the fresh face at training camp to mentoring the team’s newest standout, rookie wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter.
Following a recent practice session, Thomas, often known by his initials BTJ, shared insights on his role mentoring Hunter, while simultaneously competing alongside him during preparations for the 2025 season.
Thomas Highlights Hunter’s Progress in Mastering the Playbook
When asked about the area where Hunter has developed the most, Thomas emphasized the rookie’s dedication to understanding the team’s playbook.
“Where do I think he’s grown the most? Probably learning the playbook,”
Thomas said, adding,
“Being able to go out there and execute the plays and knowing the ins and outs. Probably just being in his playbook, learning the playbook, knowing what he has, not having to second-guess himself or think twice about what he has. So, I would say that’s probably the biggest thing.”
This growth allows Hunter to perform confidently, reflecting increased comfort and command of his roles on the field.
Maintaining Consistency When Hunter Shifts to Defense
Thomas also addressed how the dynamic changes during practice when Hunter switches to defense, a unique “double duty” challenge for the rookie. Thomas explained that the team’s mindset remains focused on maintaining a consistent level of play no matter who is on the field.
“I wouldn’t say anything changes. It’s just next-man-up for us. Parker [WR Parker Washington] knows he’s got to come in when Travis is on defense and give it his all. In our room, we want to come in with no drop-offs. We want everybody to be able to execute the same way. That’s the biggest thing, just no drop-offs. When Travis goes out or if I go out, somebody else has to step in and come ready to go.”
This approach highlights the team’s commitment to depth and readiness, which is vital during transitions on the field and across different positions.

Progress Among the Jaguars’ Young Players
While Hunter’s growth is significant, Thomas noted that the overall group of young athletes on the Jaguars roster is showing impressive development.
“All of them, really. Whether it’s Travis or all the other rookies,”
Thomas remarked, later adding,
“They all come out each and every day and push each other to be the best that they can be. They all work hard in the drills. I would say all of them. All of them are coming out here and growing and just getting better each and every day.”
The collective improvement reflects a culture of competition and teamwork, creating a promising environment for the Jaguars’ future.
BTJ’s Role as a Catalyst for Team Success
With Brian Thomas Jr. providing mentorship and leading by example, the Jaguars’ young talent—including Travis Hunter and other emerging players—appear well-positioned to continue their upward trajectory. This blend of guidance and youthful energy could be a driving force as the team prepares for upcoming seasons.
The progress of players like Thomas and Hunter symbolizes a hopeful outlook for Jacksonville’s roster, with key contributions expected to influence the franchise’s performance in the NFL.
