Chase Briscoe finished as the runner-up yet again in a recent NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway, continuing a pattern of close but unsuccessful attempts to clinch a victory. During the final green flag run, Briscoe was closing in on leader William but ultimately fell short, unable to maintain the momentum needed to take the lead. This recurring outcome intensifies the question of what is preventing him from turning strong performances into wins.
Critical Mistake Influenced Race Outcome
Briscoe openly acknowledged a pivotal error early in the race that affected his chances.
“First off, just want to apologize to the 45 and 20. That was a really boneheaded move on my part, and got in there and got loose and ruined their day. That’s 100 percent on me,”
he admitted. Despite this setback, he managed to recover and put himself in contention towards the race’s closing stages.
Challenges with Track Conditions and Race Dynamics
The repaved surface limited the options available for maneuvering, making it difficult for Briscoe to pass decisively. He described the experience of chasing down William as frustrating:
“There at the end, I was running William down. I thought I was really in the catbird seat there and I just got there and kind of stalled out. I kind of experienced that when I was leading earlier. I caught the back of the field, and same thing; as soon as I got there, I just kind of died.”
While the track constraints limited his moves, Briscoe still found positives in his performance. He praised his Bass Pro Shops Toyota and noted the motivation of having Johnny present at the race, emphasizing the team’s effort to secure a win with him there.
Consistent Second-Place Finishes Build Frustration
The latest runner-up finish marked Briscoe’s third second-place result in four races, a string that he finds increasingly frustrating. Reflecting on these near victories, Briscoe said,

“Sonoma we were just — nobody had anything for SVG, and then Dover I definitely felt like I could have eventually won that one if I was a little more aggressive, and then today I felt like I was kind of the second best there at the end.”
He acknowledged that while being in strong positions usually leads to some wins over time, luck has not been on his side recently:
“I don’t know, we’ve been in position enough, running second like that, you’re going to end up winning some of them. It just hasn’t went our way the last three or four of them, so hopefully next week it’ll be that way.”
Looking Ahead from Iowa
Despite the disappointment of not converting another strong performance into a victory, Briscoe and his team can take encouragement from their ability to rebound after mid-race troubles. The race’s outcome also highlighted the competitiveness of William’s driving and the challenge of overcoming key rivals under difficult track conditions. With several runner-up finishes recently, Briscoe’s continued persistence positions him as a formidable contender as the NASCAR season progresses, keeping fans eager for when the breakthrough win will finally arrive.
