LeBron James Lakers trade target: Exploring the potential acquisition of Tobias Harris to bolster championship hopes.

There is uncertainty about whether LeBron James will conclude his career with the Los Angeles Lakers or suit up for them during the 2025-2026 NBA season. However, the Lakers’ push for immediate success might increase if they bring in experienced players who complement James, thereby encouraging him to stay for the last year of his current contract. With financial limitations, the Lakers have shown interest in adding players like Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, but landing a high-profile trade could better signal the organization’s commitment to their four-time NBA champion.

With few assets available, the Lakers seem to be targeting a seasoned All-Star veteran as their ideal acquisition before the offseason closes.

Evaluating the Lakers’ Strategy for Veteran Acquisitions Around LeBron and Luka Doncic

While the Lakers appear focused on preparing for the Luka Doncic era, there remains a chance they pursue a roster piece who can immediately strengthen the team alongside James and Doncic, provided the cost is reasonable. Analyst Brandon Austin from PFSN has suggested that the Lakers might consider trading for Detroit Pistons’ veteran forward Tobias Harris.

Austin notes,

“Due to his expiring contract, Tobias Harris is a potential trade candidate for the Detroit Pistons,”

and adds,

“After signing a two-year, $52 million deal, Harris is owed $26.6 million in 2025-26.”

Harris delivered solid contributions last season, averaging 13.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Austin describes him as

“a steady, versatile forward, capable of scoring in a variety of ways and providing secondary playmaking while also offering veteran leadership. However, Harris’ output may not justify a $26 million salary.”

Assessing Tobias Harris’ Impact and Suitability for the Lakers

Tobias Harris’ recent playoff performance has drawn criticism, as highlighted in a tweet by fan @nick__xo showcasing his first-round statistics against the New York Knicks: 16.0 points per game, 8.2 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 1.4 blocks, with efficient shooting percentages (46% FG, 45% 3PT, 100% FT). Despite these numbers, some label him the

“worst playoff dropper of all time.”

Given his average season scoring under 14 points, Harris’ high salary demand may deter the Lakers before talks even begin. A trade seems more plausible to happen during February’s trade deadline rather than the immediate offseason. By that time, the Lakers could have a clearer understanding of their roster needs, while Detroit might seek to recoup value for the 33-year-old forward.

How Harris Might Address Lakers’ Frontcourt Needs

Detroit’s front office believes in their depth, with hopes for a significant improvement from young forward Ron Holland II, as Austin mentions:

“Detroit has depth in the frontcourt, and the team hopes for a second-year leap from Ron Holland II.”

The Lakers, meanwhile, face concerns in their forward and center positions, especially following the trade of Anthony Davis. At 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, Harris could add-needed size and versatility to Los Angeles’ interior lineup and contribute veteran leadership—qualities that might help solidify their playoff chances alongside LeBron James.

Although the trade discussions between the Lakers and Pistons currently seem unlikely, evolving team needs and priorities over the coming months could alter their positions, potentially opening the door for a significant midseason move.
