The Indianapolis Colts remain undecided on their starting quarterback as they approach their preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens on August 7. The team’s initial unofficial depth chart lists both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones as starters, separated only by the word “OR,” highlighting the ongoing competition for the quarterback role.
Head coach Shane Steichen has confirmed he has not yet determined which quarterback will lead the offense for the upcoming game.
One will play a good amount this game and the other will play a good amount next game,
Steichen said.
Anthony Richardson’s Early Career and Injury Challenges
Anthony Richardson, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has started 15 games across his first two NFL seasons. His progress, however, has been disrupted by injuries. In October of his rookie year, Richardson was placed on injured reserve due to an AC joint sprain that required surgery after just four games. During his second season, he missed two weeks with an oblique injury and was ultimately replaced by Joe Flacco after completing only 44.4% of his passes in six games.
Despite these challenges, Richardson returned later in his sophomore season and concluded the year with a completion rate of 47.7%, totaling 1,814 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also contributed on the ground with 499 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.
The Addition of Daniel Jones and His Career Overview
Considering Richardson’s injury history and inconsistent performances, the Colts signed Daniel Jones to a one-year contract worth $14 million to challenge for the starting position. Jones spent the majority of his career with the New York Giants, starting 69 games over six seasons, before serving as a backup for the Minnesota Vikings in the latter half of the 2024 season.
Jones’ career totals include 14,582 passing yards and 70 touchdowns, bringing experience and depth to the Colts’ quarterback lineup as they assess their options heading into the regular season.
What the Quarterback Battle Means for the Colts
With Richardson and Jones both in contention, the Colts are approaching the quarterback decision cautiously, allowing ample playing time for each during preseason matchups. The outcome of this competition will significantly influence the team’s offensive direction for the new NFL season.
This preseason showdown against the Ravens offers both quarterbacks a chance to demonstrate their readiness and durability, with the coaching staff’s evaluation likely continuing beyond the initial games as the Colts seek stability at the quarterback position.
